Re: My new/old 1971 Starcraft SS

Osby, I appreciate the comment. The second door came out a lot better than the first. I think I might go back and redo at least the first one. Actually I have the vinyl with a 1/4 inch of foam, but pulled the foam off as I didn't think it needed it on the doors. Left it on, on the side panels etc... If I redo the doors I'll leave it on.

Snowman, just got a notification this evening the the shipping label had been done, but that it hadn't been delivered to ups yet. Figure I will get it the middle of next week.

You done an amazing restoration Stephenatx, oh thanks for sharing your photos of your parent's boat...we got our SS with the original middle part of the boat top missing. It was nice to see what it looked like. My gal used parts of the old top to make us anew one and it turned out pretty good.

Thanks,
Rusty

Rusty - thanks for the comments. I think I have pictures which better show the top if you want me to post more. I would like to have the same top also, unfortunately my boat didn't have any of the top framework.

I don't know if anyone else has done this, but I decided to hinge my front seating so that it is easier to gain access to the storage compartments. the seating won't open all of the way because of the shape, but it opens to almost vertical. I'll see how it works and if it is not helpful will go back to securing the seats and just using the access holes.

Here's a pic of what it looks like folded down. The hole in the bow part of the seat is to have an area where the anchor can be stored. There will be a padded cover for that.

Got the motors remounted on the boat today. Feels like a big milestone. Here's the big and little Johnson's.

Re: My new/old 1971 Starcraft SS

Can anyone give me some advice on replacing the ignition switch? The switch I have works, but is in pretty bad shape and some of the wires have been cut off very short. I have diagrams of how it should be wired, but not sure which to order. The Johnson switches I have found so far all say "push to choke.". My control box has a switch you lift up on to choke and I'm wondering if I just haven't found the right switch or if I can bypass the old choke and just wire in the push to choke.

I don't know if you'll find them here, but they seem to have quite a few parts & pieces for older motors.......

Looks sweet getting closer. :D

Does the control box match the motor? What year?

I'm not sure if they are push to choke but I guessed at mid 80's and found switches from 22 up to 35 from BRP. Couldn't link straight to what I was looking at but you can run through year and model there to at least get a part number to Google for most likely cheaper.

Also don't know if a universal would fit your box but iboats carries them too.

Re: My new/old 1971 Starcraft SS

I think the control box does match the motor. The box is exactly the same as the one my folks had on their 74 SS. I am not sure what year the motor is or the exact model as any identification is missing and the po didn't have it registered, only bill of sale. (boat and trailer were registered). It is not electric shift so I would guess 73-75 or 6. I think I have found a place that has the assembly for about 55.00, just not sure after reading all the wiring problems people have had that I shouldn't just leave well enough alone right now. At least it works.

Re: My new/old 1971 Starcraft SS

When I first got the boat I assumed the motor was a 71 model as that is what the boat is. I then figured out that it had to be a later model because it is not electric shift and I believe prior to 73 they were electric shift. So I then figured, well-maybe a 73-75. Now I'm not sure of that either because the throttle cable I had to order is listed as being for OMCs, 79 and later. By the way the serial plate is missing on the motor and there is nothing on the freeze plug either, so I have no idea.

Re: My new/old 1971 Starcraft SS

The question I have right now is, can someone who has replaced the throttle cable on there boat tell me for sure how to take the old one off? I assume from looking at it that it has to be drilled out, but then the question is what do you secure the new one with? A rivet? Here are some pictures of the throttle itself, the cable end, and where the cable secures to the throttle.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: My new/old 1971 Starcraft SS

Been a while since I posted so will post some pictures to show progress. I managed to figure out the throttle cable and it works great now. finished the front cushions, got the consoles put in and seats screwed down. made a cushion for the top of the splashwell so if I have any lazy fishermen who want to put their legs up and relax it will be more comfortable. I ran the outboard today and it ran great and idled right down, but I noticed that there was some oil escaping from the joint between the lower and upper unit. posted in the Johnson forum, but if anyone here has any advice, would love to hear it.

Looking good, like the SW cushion idea.

On the motor can you tell whether its gearlube or possibly unburned 2 cycle? I though there wasn't much to seal that high up except the exhaust.

I'm not sure which it might be. Will explore it some more this weekend.

Good looking find. I know this may be an old thread but I have recently acquired a super sport myself and I gotta say it's in no shape for pictures right now as it was being used as a dumpster for the past 4 years, and sat for maybe a total of 10 years altogether. I too am from SouthTexas not sure where Stephen is from but I look forward to sharing our journey. I volunteered my 16 year old twin daughters to help restore her so hopefully soon I will walk everyone into our world
