I'm in awe of what a great deal you got on that gem of an older SC:D Congratulations! I think we are all hoping to find an old starcraft that's been taken care of as well as yours.

That kicker motor ties the whole rig together by the way;) Is it staying or already removed?

Actually the kicker motor did not come with it. Another reason I wanted this particular boat was that it had a kicker plate. That kicker motor is one of seven antique Martin outboards that I collect. The boat came with a second kicker plate in the cabin that I assume was going to replace the existing kicker plate since it is made of aluminum and in better shape. I am currently working on a 1953 Martin 100 (10hp) from my collection that I plan on permanently mounting to the new kicker plate along with an "ez steer" system to connect it to the outdrive and a second set of controls to run the throttle and clutch.
I currently have a Martin 60 (7.2hp) on the existing kicker plate just in case I had main engine trouble to get me back to the ramp. Luckily I have not yet needed it.

Hey Enterprise this is the setup that my dad uses for his kicker on his 24' Seaswirl. It works very well and I think it is called an EZ steer. You can see the swivel joint and connecting rod clamped on the Yamaha 8hp and connected to the 225hp outboard in the photo....nice to be able to troll for salmon and walleyefor pennies an hour and steer with the main helm:D

Once again congrats on the new rig...you are one lucky buyer and obviously a proud Starcraft owner. Islanders have always been my favorite boats since I was a little kid...and their predecessors.:D

Do you plan on running her on the great lakes at all...that is what those boats were designed for and you are pretty close right?

wow, what a boat, wish mine was stored indoors, and not at the bottom of a lake. My childhood memories are why i went with a starcraft as well. Best of luck with the restore on it. And i love that vintage kicker.

Awesome find and an even better story. Great to see the family get to enjoy the boat, especially your boy getting to drive! Must have been heaven to him!

Hi-What a great boat. I am looking at a 1969 islander and was wandering about the inboard. Can you tell me cruising speed with a full load?(4 adults and gear)How does it handle in the rough water? I will be in the puget sound so we do get some big water. Can anyone give me pointers on the care of this boat when it is used in the salt water? Thanks ****

My Starchief is 18', at full throttle in nice water does 35 mph and cruises high speed nicely at 30 mph without killing the engine.
I believe the Islander in 69 was 22' and they was available in either the 2.5/3.0 4 cylinder or 165 hp 6 cylinder.
The 22' Islanders and Chieftains are very popular in the big waters of the great lakes.
As far as salt water use, from what I have read, maintain the anodes in the hull + outdrive and flush your engine.
If you don't get very many more responses and want some answers from the guy's with more experience than me, you might want to post a new thread.

Your boat and the rest are absolutely beautiful!!! Wow, you guys are a talented bunch. I've just purchased this old gal but I don't have the paperwork in hand yet. The previous owner doesn't know the model but it's registered as a '79. Can I get your thoughts on what year and model this Starcraft might be? I'll be darned if I can find a similar Starcraft pic on the web. Lots of close ones but the side cuddy window is always different. And get this...I am told that this used to be an outboard and was converted to an i/o. It's a 4 banger with a Merc outdrive. Someone did some fantastic work on this boat. I'll post a pic of the back if you are interested.

My educated guess is that it is a Starchief, but by 1979 they might have been calling them Chieftains. Measure it from the tip to the stern, if it is about 18' then I am right.
If you look under the drivers seat, riveted to the hull should be a plate that will tell you what model it is.
Of course you are welcome to post pictures of the rear, we love pictures. I am curious as to how the outboard to I/O conversion looks.
Also if you start a new thread, you will be able to get more opinions.
Feel free to ask me any questions at anytime though, this is a hobby to me so I enjoy interacting with other Starcraft owners.

Thanks for responding so quickly. Here's a few more pics for your perusal. Let me know what you think. I'm really looking forward to fishing in it. It was advertised as being 19' but I'll measure it and let you know. The hull tag would be under the carpeting then maybe? (if not removed)

If you mean the carpet on the hull directly under your seat, then yes.
As thick as that seat is, it also might also be covering it up.
Good looking boat!! Somebody did some nice modifications to it.
I agree with it once being an outboard transom. I can see the outline of the old transom. Looks like they did a good job with the tranformation.

Re: My new Starcraft-Barn find, Starchief.

This is a link to the brochures thread, '79 is included(I own a '79 SS myself:)) so it may help you pin down the exact specs on the rig. SC did manufacture the cuddies as OB and I/O, OB tend to be a bit more rare.

I agree that it looks like a swell job on the OB to I/O conversion, at first I almost thought it looked factory:D The outline is visible slightly as mentioned.

If you want you can start your own thread so we can see some more pics of the rig too.

Welcome to the club:cool:

Thanks for the welcome. I feel like family already. Since I'm a "cadet" consider yourselves saluted! Let me get my hands wet and I'll get back to you guys with what other info I can glean from her. You guys all back east? This girl will be fishing the lower Umpqua in Oregon this season. I can hardly wait. Looking for a nice 4 cycle 6-8hp kicker now as she is already plumbed for gas to kicker area.

That looks a lot like the '79 chieftain I just bought.
