Just brought my new toy home today! Got a great deal! The boat was REALLY dirty and looked like it needed tons of work just to get it presentable. I was pleasantly surprised after a few hours of scrubbing that it was actually in decent shape. The floors seem fine, but I do plan on replacing them and the foam this winter. The seats need to be replaced. The hull is in excellent shape. I ran the motor very briefly, and it sounded strong. The outdrive seemed to run fine, but when it was lowered it started to whine a bit. I assume it has not been greased in a while, so I am hoping this is what caused the whine. Does anyone know if the low whine is normal on an old merc outdrive, or should I be very concerned?

J welcome to iboats and the ever increasing Starcraft club ( I think we may need to rename the resto forum the Starcraft forum :D:D) . Looks like you got a nice start there . I cant help you on the outdrive but on the interior any panels that are still in good shape can be recolored with Vinyl paint thats how I am doing the side and rear panels on my Jupiter V .

Thanks for the advice! I am not a big fan of the panel color, but they are all in pretty good shape. I was thinking of just leaving them because they are in such good shape, but I will have to check out the vinyl paint.

J I gotta go along with you on the DAYGLOW green interior :D. Mine was at least Blue but with a red and white repaint I thought the blue might be pushing it :D. You can see my interior panels in my resto thread . Theres a link at the bottom of my post . I have only done one panel so far but I have been redoing interiors this way for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time in cars so I figure it will work fine in a boat plus I wont be sitting on the panels I am painting :D.

I like the green as well. With a white hull it looks good. Welcome to the forum jcupo6! Where are you located?

Re: My new Starcraft Project

Check the outdrive fluid before you put her back in the water. Of all the years I've been boating, some Merc's whine, and some don't. But, a really loud whining sound could be lack, or low, on outdrive fluid. By looking at your outdrive, I can't tell if you have a remote fill, so you might as well go ahead and replace that fluid anyway. First, you know it's new fluid and will be able to tell if there is water in the gear oil, and second, you know you'll have it filled all the way to the top if you don't have a remote fill. If it still whines from there on out, and assuming that the impellor is throwing enough water to the engine, you've narrowed it down to something else.

Re: My new Starcraft Project

I am from Bryn Mawr, PA. Which is about 25 minutes from Philadelphia.

While the green is starting to grow on me, I might just end up trying the vinyl paint on it, not sure yet.

I am planning on greasing everything up! I will check the fluid in the outdrive and replace it either way. Hopefully that will fix the whining sound.

Does anyone know what model this is. All I know is that it's a 22' Starcraft.

JC do you know the year ? That would help . There should be a data plate usually on the right( starboard ) side of the boat near the dash . I would guess you have a Holiday by the size but there were a couple other closed bow models that size .

Yes it is! Not mine, my girlfriends stepfathers. He's the one taking the pictures.

It's a 1973. Don't know much about it, the guy who sold it to me had it for 5 years. Got a great deal, paid 600 for the whole package. He even threw in a newer fish finder and water skis.

JC if its a 73 then it is a Holiday . You got one heck of a deal on her I gave $800.00 for my jupiter and I am alot further from the water than you are with her . I would say you could take her out pretty much as is and enjoy her and rebuild her over the winter .

jcup, do you have paperwork for the boat? that should tell you the model and such... if not call your local dmv or whoever handles boat reg and they might be able to look it up by the old reg # or the serial/hid number.

I found a plate on the dash that was covered over in dirt. Once I cleaned it off, it said Holiday, so I guess that answers my question!

Jerry good deal I was pretty sure on the Holiday although I looked at the 74 brochure and not the 73 there wasnt another Tinny thata size in 74 other than the Holiday :D. ( with a closed bow :D. ) You had to go back into the 60's to get other closed bow Tinny's that large .

Re: My new Starcraft Project

Okay, so I need some opinions. The seats that were in the boat are pretty much trash and need to be replaced. I am planning on using the boat mostly for fishing. I am thinking about getting 4 pedestal seats, and two small coolers that will fit on either side of the dog house. I will get some cushions for the coolers, and use these as extra seats if I ever have more than four people. This will give me much more floor space than the back to back seats that were previously installed. I like the way the back to back seats look, but the pedestals would be better for fishing, so I am not really sure what to do.

Oh, and it has to be fairly economical!

Re: My new Starcraft Project

Jerry have you looked at Northbeaches project in the completed section below this one . Thats a huge boat and theres all kinds of things you could do with the interior . My little 16' Jupiter I plan to do 2 pedestal seats up front and a full bench across the back . You have a big enough interior you could put pedesstals up front then loungers behind those and still have room to move around , NB ended up doing 2 captins chairs then back to back pontoon benches and still put 2 seats in the rear. With that much boat I would hate to limit it to 6 seats. You could ctually rebuild and recover your existing loungers reasonably cheaply:D.
