Re: my new to me evinrude

A gallon of oil for a 50:1 mix should make 25+ gallons of mix maybe a bit more. I think my quart of oil at 100:1 did 24 Gallons. So you might get more like 40 gallons or so.

Well, a gallon of oil mixed 50:1 will make 51 gallons of premix. (1 gallon of oil in 50 gallons of gas=51 gallons.)

The top hole is the exhaust, the water line will be just beneath that.

The bottom hole is the water inlet, but the water pump is much higher than that, and is not self priming, so needs to be submerged to function as it should.

Excellent find for that price. I love the 18's. Great engines. You need a tiller (the thing to control the throttle and steer it with) they just bolt on. And I'd change the plugs. They look old. And you need a lot more water in that tank. Do you see the large horizontal bolt between the two red circles you drew? The water level should be above that bolt. And you're missing the pull starter that bolts on top. Or did you remove it? It's good backup if the battery fails.

So the answer is to put a lot more water in the tank. Then it should self prime and run.

we were thinking maybe more water as well but i got the impression that as long as the water was just above the water intake that it would pull the water. plus still work but i do plan to change before hitting the lake, and i have the pull starter, thats what i used to start it, i think the electric starter is burnt up because it made a noise like it was stuck then it just stopped so i need a new starter, and what do you mean the tiller? like the throttle and gear control? it came with that however i do need to replace the 2 cables on that but not sure where to get them..

Unfortunately 2 stroke engines do put goo out that's why4 stroke engines came along. I use biodegradable tcw3 oil (Pennzoil from walmart) to make it cleaner.

Take the starter apart (it's easy). Sand down everything gently that's rusty inside and buff up the brushes. Usually they will work fine again.

And it'll smoke in a barrel. You wont notice much out on the water. 50:1 is perfect.

alright so you watched the video and seen the smoke? just want to make sure, and i think the starter is burnt up because i could hear it like trying to move then it just stopped all together. and so the look of the water is okay? and i thought as well that since its in a barrel it probably looks worse then it is.

Re: my new to me evinrude

i just bought an old evinrude, 1965 big twin 40 hp, and i replaced the impeller, the points and coils, condensors, plugs, gearcase lube, carb kit, and fuel filter myself and i have never owned one before. they are very simple to work on. especially if you have the service manual. its runs great and parts were pretty cheap. the float in the carb rebuild was key. its all that it really needed but i did the others "just cause". ive heard a lot of good things about these motors. they are bulletproof. also the guy i bought it off told me hes been mixing it 25:1 for the past few years cause it runs better. so thats what i have been doing. the manual does say 50:1 though. ive gotten some great advice on here too. lots of knowledge around here

Re: my new to me evinrude

most of my parts i just got at my local boat place. the only thing they couldnt get was the slow speep needle. you can probably find your manual on ebay. ebay also has a lot of parts. check sierra marine out too, your local car quest can order from them and have the next day

I thought it was a '65. If it's a 62 you are running the wrong mix.

Re: my new to me evinrude

What exactly is your model/serial number?

Which cables do you need? The shift/throttle cables?
