The tilt tube connection is the fixed connection for the cable's sheath, internal cable moves in and out of sheath to turn OB.

The transom mounted clamp is for motors that dont have the tilt tube. You still need to 'fix' the end of the sheath so the internal cable can mive in and out of the end of the cable. Often the only choice if you replace cable/pulley steering for a teleflex setup. Ivm pretty sure any vendor selling teleflex setups will offer the transom clamp. Not sure if you can buy just the clam shell end clamp....

h-b Took a look where I thought it was and no luck. I'll keep looking and hope it pops up.

Well darn. I'm still 4 months from decent weather so I have time to source one. Worst case is I have so buy a new one :grumpy:

Yes! I believe it is. Does that lower hexagonal shaped piece have a ball on the end that is inside the clamp?

I got the steering clamp installed! It looks great.

But...... I am not getting enough travel side to side. Did I do something wrong?

How many turns does the steering wheel spin stop to stop?

Is it a rack or a rotary helm?

It is a rotary helm and I'm only getting 2 turns. It barely turns the engine.

If I disconnect the cable from the clamp and the engine I can get 3 turns.

Is the engine easy to turn with out being connected and will it move past the points of when it is hooked up?

Standard rotary systems usually have about 3 to 3.5 turns.

Yes the engine will flop around with gravity and 1 finger

Sounds to me like the steering cable is just out of adjustment if the wheel will spin 3 times disconnected and only when 2 connected. Looks like there's a dirty rub spot where it used to be clamped.

OK, I think I have made progress. It appears that my old Chrysler can swing a lot further than the steering allows. If I go 1.5 turns then center the engine I assume I'll be good. If I start from the far rt the steering barely moves it past center.

Here is a pic of there I think the clamp should be in relation to where the old pivot is located. Wheel is centered and engine is centered. Looks like I need to drill a new hole in the transom. :facepalm: It would be hard to go much farther left with the clamp because of the 3rd piece of transom plywood centered on the boat. My bolts are not long enough to reach through all that wood.
