Hello. I got a 1986 ringer omc outdrive just had lower unit rebuilt and brand new 07 4.3l vortec. When outdrive was out of boat we could shift it. Since we put the engine and outdrive back in the boat, It will not shift, It is real cold here Im not sure if those wires get cold or What? I drained all the hydralic fluid out to and Didnt fill it back up yet, That should have anything to do with the Shift cable though? I donno any help is much appreciated. Im not sure what I did if we pinched it when putting engine in or what the happen.

I think by his term 'ringer', ca, he must have meant Stringer.

If that's the case and you had the outdrive off, then I would bet that you probably re-installed the shift cable to the converter box improperly.

how did you couple a vortec to a stringer? There is no crankshaft drive coupler available for 1 pc rear main engines.
As far as shifting - start by looking at what's happening in the converter box behind the distributor there where the helm cable meets the drive cable.

I appoligize I meent 1986 Rinker With a OMC Cobra stern drive and I had outdrive off and the cable is about 3 foot out of it, I could pull it with my hand to engange and disengage reverse neutral and forward. Since I put outdrive in boat and I was trying to shift by pullign cable with my hand.... It is -5 outside so I dont know if this is just locking the cable up or what but To replace this cable I gotta take engine out and outdrive back off and I do not want to do that;( Hydralic fluid is all drained out, But it should still shift gears Whats do u think i Bent the cable and kinked it and it wont budge?
