My PC is messed up. Can't open files

Here is the problem. When I try to open a file in MY DOCUMENTS I get this response.<br /> PROGRAM NOT FOUND<br /> WINDOWS CANNOT FIND aol.exe<br /> This program is needed for opening file of type 'AOL HTML DOCUMENT'<br /> <br /> LOCATION OF aol.exe<br /><br /> C:\<br /> How do I fix this? I am running Windows 98 SE<br /> Thanks

I suspect you need to download AOL software. Do you have AOL? It is possible your executable got corrupted if you do. I could be wrong but that seem like a pretty specific error message.

I've re-installed AOL and the error message still appears.

OK,....it's not too big of a deal to find a solution if you can provide just a wee bit of info.<br /><br />What is the file 'type' (hint: is it a txt file, a doc file ect....)<br /><br />What Operating System are you running??? (hint: Win98, Win2000, WinXP)<br /><br />It sounds like the file association for that 'type' of file is mis-configured....<br /><br />Usually HTML documents (saved web pages) open with your default browser....<br /><br />If it's a xxx.txt file, it opens with Notepad etc.<br /><br /><br />Edit: woops, just saw, Win98....<br /><br />Try this,<br />Run WIndows Explorer<br />At top menu, pick Tools, folder options, file types<br />Look up the 'file type' in the list<br />Look to see it AOL.exe is listed to handle this file type.<br />If AOL.exe is not listed, browse to the folder where AOL is installed and click on Aol.exe and click OK.<br /><br />The point here is to determine what the 'file type' is for sure...<br /><br />What is the full file name of the file you are trying to open??

You're dealing with an idiot here. The file "type" is a web page (ie an answer here at I-boats that I wanted to keep" <br />When my mouse cursor is over the document a small "preview" appears on the left side of my screen. I've changed the file to open with notepad with your help, but that doesn't give me the photos, etc that the document contains. Thanks for the help. You've at least got me pointed in the right direction.

XCusme: I fixed it!!!!! Your help got me trying different opening programs and I hit on one that works. Thankyou so very much.
