Wow! Its that belief that causes most old boats to rot / fall apart. Jus cus its a boat and supposed to get wet means water won't hurt it, right?
Fiberglass is permeable. The seats are installed with screws that perforate that "sammich". The vents in the bilge let water to in from the back side. Once its in it doesn't easily come out. Freeze a hull with wet innards a few times and you get mush.
If they were truly waterproof there wouldn't be so many restoartion threads.
Mac, and others, floatation foam in a boat that is sound will not get wet by rain, snow, sleet or lake, river or ocean water. The hull and deck sandwich them and are waterproof. Only if the boat is damaged, could the foam get wet.
