I bought this little boat in October to get my son some tiller experience and him/me some restore experience. I'm pretty much done, with one exception that I'll end with. It's a '72 14 foot Sea Nymph, some kind of a later kit trailer, and a Clinton OB. $320:

First I stripped the trailer and did some real light sanding. Sprayed it with Rustoleum "Professional" High performance enamel, new lights and wiring, $39:

After a vinegar/water bath I applied Gluvit on the inside to all seams and rivets. Slopped it everywhere as I had a teeny tiny leak that I couldn't find. $25:

Re: My Quickee Sea Nymph project

Then my son sanded (sort of) the whole inside with 120 and I did another vinegar/water wash before I primed with zinc chromate primer. Then I used Pettit Easypoxy on the white portions, added colorant from my gelcoat patch kit to get the bluish color. Two coats, two quarts, Roll/tip on first coat (second too on white vertical surfaces). Sanded lightly between the two coats with used strips of the 120. Three coats would've been much better, but it was basically a quart per coat and getting expensive. I finished all horizontal surfaces with silica sand added to the second coat for good traction. About $90 in paint and primer.

I made a new OB pad out of some scrap plywood. Glued three pieces together and hit it about 10 times with some old Spar Varnish I had laying around. Too old, but it finally would setup. New stainless hardware $15:

Added this POS, B&S 5 bhp that I found new but seized. Had it running in an hour. $200 (I actually got three of these OBs for $600 and sold two for a total of $990, so in one way I paid a negative ($390), but I am treating that as a separate transaction and considering the $200 for the one . . . I’ll get something for the Clinton on eBay):

Ready for her new Maiden voyage. Total $699.

She handles very well, planes, 11.9 MPH GPS and no leaks. Thanks to all for some help along the way, especially to DJ who helped me with some paint process stuff offline.

Now for the last thing; I am considering getting a disk for my drill motor and doing 1/2 - 2/3 circles all over the exterior, arranged kinda like scales. Comments on that plan?

Good deal on a nice little tinnie. I think the machine turning idea on the outside is a cute one, but it's a little like gilding the lily, isn't it?

I dunno, but I kinda like the usual oxidized finish on an aluminum boat. It's going to oxidize again, in any case, and your fish-scale pattern will sorta disappear.

Have fun!

Would you care to ellaborate Windyboy? Are you talking about the exterior idea or something else?

Hey QC, that is a really neat job! Especially the interior. I don't know how hard you'll have to push to get the turned look, but you might end up with some wavy surfaces.

Worth a try, how about just do the transom and see how it looks?

Re: My Quickee Sea Nymph project

Well JB, I got her in October, but I think I honestly could've done all the work in a well managed weekend. With no interior, no electrical and the trailer in good mechanical condition, it was very easy. The hardest thing was pulling the trigger on the paint plan. Exterior? Extent of interior? Paint rail, yes/no? Non-skid on the floor? Seat-tops?

Now I have to go find a little Whaler for our next project . . . ;)

QB, I was refering to the exterior circle idea how thick is metal? Those small disc eat a lot of metal. Might be best to use low RPM or by hand.

QC, It's called "jeweling". I wouldn't want to do it to your boat.

ASCsidepods5.jpg

You can do it with a dowel rod and some valve lapping compound. or a scrubby pad may work. If you're going to do the whole hull, I'd make a tool (wood) about 4" diameter. Lotta work, and you should clear coat it because it will tarnish.

Why can I never find sweet deals like that? Looks great. Regarding the swirl pattern, I would definately do a test run on a scrap piece of metal first, but the idea sound pretty cool.

Re: My Quickee Sea Nymph project

Nice job QC, good for the youngun to get some tiller time. How old is he?

When I was twelve, I bought a 12' glass over ply row boat with a 1952 5hp Johnson. I bought it with paper route money. Ran that boat around Newport Bay, San Diego, and various lakes. Got many a sunburn in that thing.

Your boat reminds me of a friends tinny. In our 20's, we were up at Pine Flat Lake. He was driving and I was throwing M80's taped to 69 cal lead balls over the front of the boat as we were skimming along. They made a spectacular geyser. One went off right under midship. The concusion bruised my foot and put a kink in the keel. It started oozing water. For years after that, my friend never hesitated to point out the kink and remind me of the leak.

I have heard that cleaned, sanded, aluminum oxidizes quickly. I would agree that sealing would be important. The inside looks great, a quality job, I will certainly watch for the finished product. I am not up on old boat values but surely that boat is worth more than you have invested.

Re: My Quickee Sea Nymph project

Cool story Boomer . . . Aaron is 13 (middle one) and seems to have the most mechanical inclination among the three. Pretty hard to compete with World of Warcraft though

Anyway, I am leaning toward doing nothing with the exterior now. It does sound like a fresh sanding will lead to a need for a sealing coat of some type. I am not interested in spending any more cash on it as I do believe I am reasonably above the waterline now (so to speak) and Aaron's and my plan is to sell it and do another. Probably a 13 Whaler . . .

Thanks all for the nice comments :)

Re: My Quickee Sea Nymph project

As far as getting the swirl pattern on aluminum, my grandpa has been doing it on his dump truck since the 40's. Use a plain ol' electric drill and a circular wire wheel. The wire won't take off as much material at all and it will look great. My grandpa's swirl job last forever and he doesn't coat it with anything.

Yep, I fought that distraction with my, now, 19 y/o. I always tried to include him in my different projects. Heck, I have a fortune in good tools that need to get passed on to someone. He was never interested, UNTIL possession of his first car was the issue. (not sure if you were here during that odyssey)

I MADE him participate in the resurrection of his first car, before he was allowed to take possesion. It was my last chance to instill some mechanical sense in him. That car sat for many weeks because he would not make himself available, but finally, bit by bit, he did.

Now to my great joy, when something needs doing on his car, he is the first to break out his tool kit. If I had not forced the issue he would have never learned some basics, the economy of it and the sense of satisfaction when he was part of the solution.

Re: My Quickee Sea Nymph project

Wow Boom, similar stuff here, but I think you did a waaaay better job. I have totally fooked up with cars and my 18YO. Bought him a nice car for us to "share". To be fair he kicked in $2700 but I bought "us" a 2003 VW GTI 1.8T which I am still in love with. The problem is he treats it like carp! More accurately, "for granted", which of course it was . . .

The 13 YO has been told that "Jeffrey screwed up your life" . . . ;)

because the thread is over 2 years old, and wherever he hosted the pics he has probably taken them down.
