Re: My Retirement Project

man, that looks like an excellent fishing rig. Lots of flat surfaces for all the...well...flat surface things we do. Not to mention that it looks really good to boot! Great job.

Murphy hard to believe that is the same boat you started with. I am very envious!

You need to petition someone or ask a mod to put all your posts into one quaint location. You need to have all the polishing in this thread as well. :)

Re: My Retirement Project

Heres some pics of mine if they will help, I think you are going to end up with some unintended holes no matter what you do.

You have to open the door to where you want it then locate the top mount then the bottom and then see if it will close, I have an extended bracket on the livewell that actually holds it closed when it is shut oh and only use enough screws to hold it till you are sure it is right.

You should be able to get away with one per door, they are pretty strong, I used 2 on the front storage cause it had a seat and pedastal on it originally and the rod locker is just really long, well, and I had them.

With the exception of the economy it has been pretty cool working for a boat company, I was the 5th person in so I know everyone and the vendors come in droves when you are starting a new company so there were tons of vendor samples to be had, I looked up these shocks and the mounts on Cabelas, holy crap, there is no way I could have done this without my connections as with most of my boat.

I would love to work with you but I think it will be a good while till we are looking to hire anyone but I will keep you in mind, we could use somebody at the body shop to do all the stupid sanding though...

Thanks for the pics. I work so much better following a "show and tell" rather than just stricking out on my own. Looks like you have a nice fishing rig as well.:)

Re: My Retirement Project

Well, in between watering the dog, feeding the dog, walking the dog, scooping up after the dog, playing with the dog I managed to get all of my main electrical wiring done before lunch. After reading some of the horror stories about new owners trying to figure out the nest of wires on a rig they just bought, I decided to label everything, including the left/right speaker wires. The dog & I are having a late lunch today. Stereo all done except for the aft speaker wires. (Will do that after the motor is strapped on and all of the cables are in place. VHF all done. Still have to decide which aft corner to mount the Ant. I'll ask dog about that.

Only a couple of cosmetic things left and we're ready to drag the beast over to the boat shop and strap on those twin 500's we bought. Think it will still float ?

We did a pretty fair job on the electrical, as basic as it is. Hell, I have trouble getting a light buld screwed in straight. Truth be known, I just kept cruising all of these forums until I thought I understood what everyone was talking about. Proly have to do more cruising before we are done...:)

Hope ya all have a nice Memorial Day weekend. Me, we have functions to attend.

Hey Hey !!!! My gas shocks arrived today. EZ installation. No "special tools required ". The damn things are REPLACEMENT shocks. No mounting hardware included. No mention of this in the E-Bay add. Wrote to the seller. He sez to return and he will refund. I wrote back to seller. You refund and I will return. Rechecked his ad. Charged $11.00 for shipping. He paid $8.85 parcel post. Wrote back to seller: you owe me purchase price, $11.00 shipping charges and $8.85 to return the bloody things. No reply from seller yet. Looks like a paypal claim again. Gettin' tired of this stuff. I think I may be able to get the mounting hardware from my ford dealer, or possibly an auto parts store. Probably cost more than the four shocks. It's just the principal of the thing. That first fiasco with the Johnson has put me on the defensive.

Motor being tank tested this evening. The shop owner says it looks very good. Clean, obviously been worked over. All cables, controls and steering thingies included. Key came as well. Then he pointed out the exact same motor which he picked up last week at an auction for $65.00. Not sure if I like this guy or not....Knowing he'll do right by me though. :)

Re: My Retirement Project (Chapt nine)

Oh yeah. Another Pay Pal dispute. I hate this crap.

Finished the seats tonight. Couple of flush mount handle pull things. VHF Ant mount. Dog said starboard aft tansom corner. So I did. Pretty smart dog. Vacumed. Didn't realize how dirty the carpet was getting from the metal drill shavings, sawdust from the seat pedastal mounts. Not to mention the dust. Maybe I'll put in one of the whole house vacum systems like the RV's have.
Time to hit the sheets, too tired to spell right. :)

It Runs !!!!!!!:D

Tank tested the new outboard today at my local boat shop. Started right up, shifts great, idles and runs great. Everything the seller said about the motor was 100% true. What a treat ! ;)

Heres a few pics. I decided to do the installation my self. Hell, it only took my boat shop guy what, 3 weeks to get it in the tank. That's after I called this morning and told him I was coming in to pickup the motor. Originally he was going to do all of the install for me, but I figured that might taker another 3 weeks, or more. So tomorrow morning, I'm taking out all of the factory controls and stuff and installing the new rude. Boat shop guy charges $80.00 labor per hour. I only charge a six pack and most times even less than that !

Got the new E-Tech decals for the hood. Have to go find the paint as soon as I get the motor wired down. Should be painting this weekend with any luck.

Looks good Murph! I like the trolling plate. You mentioned before, but I forgot...which lakes are you targeting? Just in Kansas, or gonna travel with the rig? A guy I used to work with in Dodge City used to go to a big lake up by Russell. I saw the Big Mac lake in Nebraska once, but wasn't into boats at the time.

Re: My Retirement Project (Chapt nine)

This year my target lakes will be Wilson, Cheney and El Doardo. This spring we are very busy with the landscaping, trying to get grass to grow and then I'll be spot painting the house this fall. I'm bustin' my butt this spring so that next spring and summer the spouse and I can go off and play for a week or three at a time. At that time I most likely will be hauling the boat with us. I mean, whom in thier right mind would go off for 2 or 3 weeks and not do some fishing ? Unheard of....................... I'd like to fish the north east border of Texas for one area. I'm starting to take notes on all of the fishing shows I watch on the spots that look interesting enough to include in our short hops next year. The list will probably end up being much longer than our trips...............

The Trolling Plate.................................

I'm getting mixed comments on that. Seems the majority of guys around here don't care for them. This is the first one I have ever seen. Guy at my boat shop was going to take it off until I told him not to. Said something about exhaust buildup and the engine cutting out. I don't know what to make of it but I think I'll keep it on and see what it does.

Any comments out there in boat land ??

I've seen those trolling plates before. Kind of an older style method of slowing down. Maybe the plate causes enough resistance on the exhaust flow that it doesn't all exit the cylinder and the motor stalls.

Never used one myself, but I have read where other people have and they work fine.

I did a search in the engine forums for the trolling plate. There's a bunch of discussion but nothing really concrete. Think I'll stick to my original plan.;)

SEA TRIALS..................

Rescued my project from the boat shop today. Replaced all of the steering and rigging. Stopped by the lake on the way home (yup, its actually on the way home !) thought it time for some modified sea trials. Everything works very well. Steering, throttle, plane, balance etc. Can't do WOT on our little lake ("no wake lake") but it sure jumps out of the hole very nicely. Have a couple of small issues to address; drainplug, trailering guide ropes. This tinny is so light the least little cross wind makes trailering a real challenge for one person.

I'll be on one of the larger lakes early next week for full blown sea trials and that will be the real test. Hope to have the rest of the motor painted by then and will post final pics. :p;):D:)

That's great news Murph...she looks good. Might consider some upright guide-ons for your trailer...another project but they work like a charm and are easy to make/install. I used pipe flanges bolted to the trailer and one-inch galvanized pipe, with PVC covers on the uprights. Distance between uprights should be one-half inch to one inch wider than widest point on your boat.

Oh Yeah. I have a couple long pieces of real heavy 2" PVC. Sewage pipes I suppose. I'm going to try the trailer guides that TD did a thread (or a comment) on way back when. The material is nearly all free and if it doesn't work, or I break one side off I'll go the galvanized pipe/pvc route.

I did realize after all of the cussing, pushing and pulling, wet tennies, cold feet and really glad I was the only one at the ramp, that I had the trailer in the water too far. But, this was my first visit to this ramp. Hell, I'm a virgin at this entire proceedure. The water was too murky to see more than a couple of feet. Had no idea what the ramp surface was like. (it sucked) Had no idea of the depth at the end of the ramp, ( pretty deep) so I just winged it. No dock, so once we were floating off of the trailer we were committed to go sailing. Have no intention of beaching my freshly painted white hull. Left the car sitting on the ramp and tooled around the lake or awhile.

I'll let you know how the pvc trailer guides work out. I have a feeling I'll be doing the pipe & pvc when I return from the lake next week...............

Well done Murpy, she looks beautiful, few things nicer than shiny aluminum.

You will get the loading down with some practice, I river fish and have to deal with a 5-6 mph current to load mine, at night, it can be a challenge.

I think you will really enjoy fishing a boat you built yourself, on mine everything is where it is because I put it there,it is pretty cool, so now when someone says nice boat you can answer, "Thank you, I built it myself"
