Re: My Retirement Project

How much compound did it take you?

I used 3M Alum Restorer & Polish. Comes in an 18oz plastic jar from iBoat Store item # 09020 (I think). They say to use sparingly as it goes a long way and they are right. It does go a long way.

I used 2/3 of the container. 16' boat, 2 complete passes with the compound. The second pass of course took less compound than the first pass. I think with shipping I paid around $32.00. I have enough left over to do the motor 25 times.

Re: My Retirement Project

Thanks. From what I can see from the before pic, there was some pitting. Was it pretty deep? Im assuming thats why you sanded first....

Oh Yeah.........................Pits Pits Pits and more damn Pits !!

Every spot you see on the pic of the before shot has a pit to some depth beneath it. It was impossible to "pull" all of the pits up with sanding. I didn't want to create any thin spots on the hull due to over sanding. So, yupe, still have some pits remaining, but with the polish you can't see them unless you are up real close. I can see every damn one of them in my sleep !!

I painted the bottom and 95% of the pits that remained after sanding filled in pretty good. Can't see the bottom................................

Don't hesitate to fire any questions at me. Every time I take a break from messing with the boat I jump on here to see whats new. (I take a lotta breaks )

LOL.... Colors that match... That's too funny. I was set on painting the interior rails, splash well and transom of my Starcraft snow white. And I did !!. Then I looked at my silver/gray metalic Chevy Tahoe and said ... sheeeze, it doesn't match.. Sand, Sand, Sand, repaint.. They are now Interlux Perfection Platinum.. They match pretty close too... ROFLOL.. The sides are still going Dark Dark Dark blue but I'm now going to leave a little room at the lower edge for more of the platinum to tie it all together.

:D Like I said, red, white & blue......

Re: My Retirement Project

The last time the beastie was in the driveway it looked like a salvage job. Had no personality whatsoever. Things have changed a little bit. Sitting on the front deck watching the sunshine bounce off the hull makes me realize that the past 100 hours or so have been worth the effort after all.

Even the main squeeze is starting to show some interest.

Now, cleanup the shop and drag it back to start on the neat interior stuff. That should go fairly quickly but I doubt that I'll make my April 11th USCG inspection. Power hasn't arrived yet.......:(
