I've been to Vegas a couple times. I always have fun, but I'm always ready to go home in 4 or 5 days too. Its a neat place, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Ok you guys, I cannot vent to the family because it may hurt some feelings so you guys get the brunt.
First let me say that I am not a people person generally. Meaning that as vacations and leisure go, I more likely to spend my valuable vacation time relaxing with my wife and kids on a beach somewhere rather than partying it up in a casino in Vegas. But here I went anyway.
.......

What he said ^... for most, once is all it takes. For others, the need to try and "win" back their last trip's loses seems to be a draw (no one admits that.) I don't fault those that may live / work there - everyone needs a job and you have to take in to account your talents and where the salary may pay the most for the skills you have.

Consider it a sign of a solid up-bringing by your parents. Those casino's were not built with vistors' winnings. . . . and next time you're in Nevada, there is a lot more to see than neon.

Drewpster et all,
No offense taken. We have lived in Las Vegas for just over 2 years. Vegas has multiple sides to it. There is the gambling/shows/glitz and glamor. There is the seedy underside which feeds off of the sin that comes to visit and/or live in Vegas. There is the rest of us who see Vegas as a good place to earn a living while enjoying the desert southwest. I agree, the desert is much prettier elsewhere. But here, you have great desert hiking. Great lake boating and fishing. There is snow skiing close by and beautiful mountains to be discovered. Oh, and yes, no mosquitoes and few flies. My point is there is plenty of beauty to be found in and around the valley. Little traffic and not really many people, unless you stay on the strip.
We don't gamble. I like the analogy to throwing your money down the toilet. They spend many billions building those palaces which have perfected the art of taking your money from you. But without the casino industry, there would be little left in Vegas.

Once your away from the Las Vegas Strip and into the suburbs its just like any where else.

I worked in IT at one of the Largest Hotel/Casino company with about 20 properties in LAS Vegas, Laughlin, Reno combined. I saw all the behind the scenes financial stuff and I was blown away by all the money they take in daily. Of course the overhead cost is out the roof and Gaming Taxes takes a big chunk of it.

Then I saw people gambling their life away and even taken out loans to pay off their gambling debt or get loans to gamle on. Its a vicious cycle.

I have friends that have lost their jobs, careers, homes and family to the gambling addiction. It's sad to watch. Just like any other addiction, they try to hide it from everyone around until the end and they still believe that they can get back on that hot winning streak.

They don't build billion dollar palaces to give money away...

and let me tell you.....
I live next to LAS VEGAS......
This City has so much to offer.....Besides the water running out.:D
Been here since 1984. Can always go somewhere where climate lets me.
To hot.....Go to mountains. 20 minute drive to Mt. Charleston or to Mead, boating as QC likes to put it.:p
But when it comes to LAS VEGAS........
I LOVE THIS PLACE......
I'm 20 minutes from either......
AND work in the casino industry!
You want to have fun here?
Do your research!:D

And I can't believe any other, from this fine valley has not spoken up.

I'm ashamed.

Hey... I've spoken. I'm not a fan of the strip. Good for entertainment. So was South Beach. I've taken my puppy up to Mt. Charleston to play in the snow and the next day to Lake Mead to play in the water. :)

It's a good place to live, if you're not an addict. If you have addiction problems, you're screwed. I've seen the best of this place (Heaven) and the worst (Hell). It is truly up to the individual.

Great dining. Just about every restaurant in the world is here. Great bars/grilles. Adult scene. Take your kids hiking, ATVing, boating, etc... The place has a lot to offer. Not just casino's and over priced shows. As said before, the place draws all kind of bad intentioned people. Drug dealers, con artists, low life.

Crystal Meth is a huge problem. But, must people never see it thanks to the wonderful law enforcement. Speaking of which, the law enforcement here is great. The officers are very polite and courteous. They're quick to respond. You just feel like they're on side and not looking for a reason to issue you a ticket.

Thumbs Up to Vegas for the right person.

Re: My trip to Vegas, I mean no offense.

Eh, I've lived in Vegas for 15 years and think everyone has valid points here. I haven't been to the strip/downtown in over 10 years as theres nothing of interest for me down there. Once you get away from the gambling and seedy parts of Vegas, it's a nice place to live if you like the heat.

We couldn't get out of Vegas for our anniversary this year so we stayed at a casino for a few nights... We were bored to death, no good movies on the TV or theater, restaurants closed early because of the economy, $100 gambling went like water through a sieve so we stopped, no perks. 2 months later we went to CA to actually celebrated our anniversary, spent the same amount of money and had a blast.

Vegas has changed from years ago and it's all about the casino's making money now, not about keeping their customers happy (and spending money). You used to be able to get great food and entertainment at a decent price and the casino's would make their money off the gambling. Now they ding you every way possible, making themselves more profitable, so I don't see the attraction to go to the casino's anymore. Seems every time we found a casino restaurant we like, they turn it into something else, oyster bar, fast food court. We went to our favorite casino restaurant a few weeks ago and it was changed to a chain restaurant, looked over the menu and walked out... It's not the same ol' Vegas anymore.

The suburbs are nice and I think it's a great place to live, lots of things to do close by; Charleston, Mead, Mohave, Utah is close and so is So Cal. No state tax is a bonus and while the traffic can get bad at times, it's nothing like Phoenix or So Cal. I don't mind living here, but would make a change in a heartbeat when/if the opportunity comes up.

You couldn't have said it better except for one thing.

And I quote. " I don't mind living here, but would make a change in a heartbeat when/if the opportunity comes up", end quote.

With that said......Is that quantity or quality.

Were I live now is like the Las Vegas "Gilbert, AZ. Mountains is a short trip away, Lakes also a short distance. We have camping, boating, quading, snow sking and gambling at indian casinos.

When I lived in Las Vegas from 1993 to 2001 the Hotel/casino owners was pushing a family las vegas enviroment. Now they gone back to Pushing gambling and adult entertainment. Its a shame.

Re: My trip to Vegas, I mean no offense.

I despise gambling in a way most will never know. I have a very good friend who was on the superbowl team for the (sorry will not put the team here) and then got a huge bonus when he went to another team. He had the addiction, his wife is now ex wife, kids went from having everything to nothing. I have all his game worn gear in my attic as well as his superbowl ring, championship rings. These are collateral for loans that will never be repaid, not cash to him, just to an apartment manager and furniture store so he could at least not be on the street. When the kids are older I told his ex wife, also a friend that I would ship it all back to her and the kids at no charge. I just don't want him to be able to sell it to someone else and then the kids will never get there legacy of their dad. He is really a great guy but, he can't shake the monkey off his back. It has destroyed his life and his wife's and kids as well.

Re: My trip to Vegas, I mean no offense.

gambling sucks, so does the traffic on the strip. if you live here, and learn to use the casinos for great food discounts and bowling/movie theaters, then its all good. I love being close to mead, thats what we spend our extra money on. not slot machines. i live about 15 miles away from the strip anyways. like said somewhere above, you cant beat the food here. and u learn to get used to being able to get whatever you want whenever u want, because places are open 24/7 to accomodate all the workers and stuff.

Both, less quantity, more quality. I'd prefer a smaller town and kids that were taught right from wrong,,,, instead of how most the kids in my neighborhood are, it's the parents fault though. You wouldn't believe the crap my 8YO has come home with from playing in the neighborhood, teenage stuff, pretty sad parents would expose their small kids to that. My wife and I have tried our best to curb it, but kids will be kids. We actually live in a neighborhood where almost everyone on the block knows each other, parties on the 4th, etc. Kind of different from the usual Vegas neighbor hood where nobody knows their neighbors.

There's noting "close" to Vegas with a small town atmosphere unless you want to make an hour drive, which I don't. I wouldn't mind Boulder City, but it's pretty expensive out there.

Its everything wrong with society all rolled up into one tight little city.

Hmmmm, that's why it's called sin city :D

Is Kenny wearing a rug? Sure looks like it.
Hate the place. Its everything wrong with society all rolled up into one tight little city.

Sorry you hate the music ZEETER, or was it his dud's? OR word's?
I like that, "One tight little city".
This "tight" little city has grown to over 2 mill in the last 10 years.
Wonder why ZEETER? Now we're the no.1 in foreclosures. Wonder why, ZEETER?
All you MF's came here and forclosed on the stuff you couldn't afford because of speculator's from the most part (94%) Calif.

Go back to Kenny and listen instead of staring at his head.
And stay off the machine's next time. ;)

I love this town.... oh um...I mean this CITY!

Re: My trip to Vegas, I mean no offense.

Going back some years........Vegas had good food, good prices and great hotels.
Same time frame, cruise boats had good food, good prices & great accommodations. Both had gambling. Recently, I did both again. One thing was very apparent. Both industries now make no pretensions whatsoever, that making lots of money is their primary goal. Gambling has always been a guaranteed source of income and today every other support system is a guaranteed source of income. The days of gambling subsidizing the support systems is gone forever.
Kev.
