I'm going to go ahead and attempt my first restoration/improvement. How I ended up with an unidentified Crestliner instead of the Starcraft I thought I was getting is outlined here:
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=561919

I am a complete unskilled noob at a lot of this stuff, but I've so far cleaned out the interior and am experimenting with different methods to prep the hull for paint. The hull colors, and the layout and nature of the interior are as yet unborn. I'm thinking . . maybe textured vinyl for the decking and for the seats, maybe 2 pedestals up front and a pair of center-facing pontoon benches behind? Dunno . . .

I first identified the boat as a Sea Scout, but they come in a 14 and this is a 15. I also have more and deeper stringers than the Sea Scouts I have researched. Comparison below, \sea Scout in red, my boat in blue.ScoutRed.jpgStringers.jpgSeaScoutStringers.jpg

Sorry about the mess, I still haven't got a handle on posting pics the way I want them to look.

Re: My unknown Tinnie Resto begins!

I have to keep going back to review other resto threads - I have to decide on what to use for primer, undercoat and topcoats; method of paint application (I will use the small foam rollers but I haven't figured out what "roll and tip" means); I believe I will use spar varnish on the fir ply decking (main deck area is 5x8! :(); how many of the underdeck cavities should I fill with noodles. The motor I am handing over for professional servicing - buddy is a boat mechanic.

I don't intend to strip to bare aluminum, rather to sand to a smooth base, spot-priming where necessary.

I hope to get answers to these issues and more as I go along (it's too darn hot out to work quickly) but my pressing need for info relates to the filling of pre-existing hardware holes in the topsides. I have bought some JB Weld but have no idea how to fill these holes which were used to secure cleats and other items which I am removing and replacing in new locations, or are even older holes which a PO dealt with bu simply inserting and painting over a flathead screw.

To brighten this post with a pic, here is the color combo SWMBO would like to see at the end of this journey. Edit - put in a bigger pic. I wonder if anyone can identify that color for me?

Re: My unknown Tinnie Resto begins!

Any old tin is cool no matter the maker. :)

If it isn't a basic color I don't know the name but I do like it and the scheme.

As far the seating arrangement in these small boats storage is at a premium and the harder to use the less I tend to use it. Thus I'd try to avoid blocking access to under the splashwell too much. I like the idea of the toon benches but would look at how much of the base will need to be cut off as they will sit high if left as is. Do think possibly just some long toon benches set along the sides could be a good seating idea. They would give you storage, a walkway and positioned right you could sit on the end for a drivers seat.

The best description of roll and tip I can give is to think of the rolling as just a means to get coverage then the tip is using just the tip of a brush to remove excess and flatten/even out the finished product.

Some Tin heads here have put new sheet alum over the existing. Lots of work but looks great. Others have used rivets. On mine I will be buying a box of 10/24 x 1/2 stainless truss head bolts and nuts, hoping to get flange nuts. Box of 100 will be just about right for filling all the holes.

All of them unless you need a trough or ski locker or... Pink of blue foam will also give you maximum flotation. A little more work but flotation is key if something bad happens.

Haha - thanks for describing exactly what I meant! My thinking was as you said - I need that storage space under the splashwell. I like the idea of a bench across the back so that passengers can more easily achieve a balance in the boat, but the long-wise benches give more seating as well as lounging for little ones. Plus looks kewl.

Thanks - kind of what I imagined it to be.

I looked those up - simple, quick solution and they will look good as well. Are we going to paint over them? :)

Ya, yr right. And I really have no need to pile on the extra work of a locker.

Although the Aquamarine (maybe?) looks good & I like it, depending on what paint you plan to use, getting that shade/color will be a trial & error process that you'll have to mix yourself most likely. Even some of the non-marine specific paints that guys in the Starcraft Owner's forum, are stock off the shelf colors that may not trend anywhere near that color.

Yep, I hear you. Color matching requires a bit of magic and a lot of art to it dead on. I think we will find some shade of aqua that will make us happy.

I did a little engine research and it seems my Kiekaefer Merc 650 is from 1963-65, and so likely the boat is as well. I hope someone recognizes it. I started driving in 1965 (a 1964 Pontiac Parisienne custom-sport convertible that I crashed in about 2 months) so I do have fond sentiments about that era.

Re: My unknown Tinnie Resto begins!

A 500 will push that tinny pretty well. I've got a 63' 500 & a 71' 650. I like those 60's Mercs, but happily the 61' Evinrude 75hp will find a home on the FireFlite.

Sphelps just painted his boat a nice light shade of blue that he mixed himself from off the shelf colors. But that is not easy, but would make it 1 of a kind.

Topsides on a tinny that shade will get hot in the summer. Otherwise, its a nice looking color. It always pays to garner a little good will w/ the Admiral by letting them pick the color:)

Re: My unknown Tinnie Resto begins!

The only problem with custom colors is if and when touch up is required. PITA to match and blend it in.

Had a Merc 500 1967, it was an awesome motor. I hope it's treating 73chieftain as well as it did me. They built a great motor back then.
