ANY style of head CAN be emptied at DIY. You can install a 12v macerator pump and a fitting for a hose... you can then either pump at an rv dump station or into your home sewer or septic system....

I think you have to be careful with a home-made rig like that b/c if you get inspected, and it appears it could be operated to dump overboard, you get a ticket. I can't be sure of the specifics b/c I am not in that league, but I recall comments to that effect.

as long as it is locked out with a valve (and possibly a lock) it's fine.

BTW "pump out" is NOT a type of head.... ALL types can have a pump out

Styles include but are not limited to:

Porta pottie

Manual hand pump

Electric flush

Vacu flush

I never even knew there was a vent filter. I will have to look in to that.

EDIT:
After a google search I do not have one. There is a great example of where Bayliner cuts costs where it can. I will be installing one of these before the season starts.

you must have one if you have a tank. It wouldn't work otherwise. Air had to be displaced. I've had three Bayliners with heads, all had a vent.

This is a good point. I suppose to be accurate the

HEAD is the location or general function, whether it be a bucket or a vaccu-flush.

Type of device is probably more accurately thought of How it 'Flushes'

Manual Pump
Electric Flush
Vaccu Flush
Gravity (porta-pottie).

How it is emptied:

Holding Tank/Pump out
Porta pottie
Discharge

It's easy to make some assumptions and refer to one thing as another.

The Vent part is required, The Filter part is only required if your Smeller works! :D

I have the vent and easy access to it. With that said there is just a hose to a through hull fitting. Nothing between.

Re: My wife insists on a boat with a head. How do they work?

My rig might be small (14.9) but the first accessory I bought for it was a porta potty. They are the best invention ever! Just plain mean thinking a women can go out with you for the day, have a beer, glass of wine or a soft drink and have her hold it or worse force her to pee in the woods catching poison ivy etc.
Our porta potty is a lot cleaner than most marina's, restaurants or an outhouse bathroom.

I keep it up in the bow and that matching grey boat towel serves to hide it or I put a throw-able preserver on it and it's another seat.
That blue liquid stuff I buy in walmart an ounce keeps it fresh smelling for at least 3 trips and the quart bottle last for a couple of seasons. I just have to empty it when the bottom tank gets full.
I just bring it in the house and pour it into the toilet.

One time I got to the lake an hour away and realized I left the port potty in my garage . . . Man was my wife pissed having to use one of those plastic bottles like the ones you pee in when in the hospital. West sells the Little Johns in pic below. I keep one in both my car trunk too when traveling and they make an attachment for women too shown in light blue just below the little john pic.
But the port potty is the best investment ever for a carefree and comfortable day of boating.

And give me a break . . those of you who say they turn around or don't use a port potty . . . one way or another its winding up in the lake and the lakes I boat on are also drinking water for the houses around the lake.

I keep it fastened with a bungie cord, so it stays in place but they come with screws and brackets to deck mount it.

Check out this pic taken from a restaurant balcony showing where I keep the PP. And check out the second pic. It's another accessory thats a wife saver (git it, lifesaver/wife saver) iboats sells this one too around $50. It clips under your bimini when needed like when we are moored with other boats around or docked at a marina. It's canvas and made by Taylor Made who makes quality stuff. It can be used also as a changing room or we put the port potty in it when we need too. I suppose it might have other uses too :D

If you have a line to a vent then all you need is this. Split the line along the hull near the vent. Get yourself this and a couple of hose clamps and you will be good

I didn't know these existed either. As soon as I can make sure I have enough room in there for one it'll be on order. So it looks like you replace the whole thing each season? It says each cartridge is easily replaceable, however it seems you just unscrew the ends and put a new canister in. Not a cheaper cartridge?

Don't know I was going to read the directions when it came in and see what the deal is. As for every season Im not sure bout that. I think I will replace it when it starts smelling. Its not like I am in a rush to spend $130 every season one.

I don't replace mine each season. Might go for two but not any longer. You will know (smell)when it needs replaced.

My 22.5 Starcraft Islander came with a porta poti. It keeps the wife and little girl happy. I don't even empty it. It takes the wife a minute to dump the thing. I can't say how much time this thing has saved me running back to the dock so the girls can pee.
