My Winter Project

In case you missed my last post about Stainless Steel, I had a hinge break on my sunpad/engine cover. My Brother is welding the hinge, but I took the vinyl sunpad, which is also the back to the bench seat in the rear, off. This is a heavy composite that is covered by the vinyl and foam. The underside that it was mounted to, which the hinge was also mounted to is fiberglass. The hinge mounts to this with 4 screws per side. My brother suggested, besides replaing the hardware (which i was planning to do anyways), that I also re-fiberglass the holes, and then drill new pilot holes for the hinge when i re-install it.
Now, My brother is a propulsion engineer for an airline, and developes repairs for aircraft, so he goes over the top on some things. But, I am wondering if I should go ahead and fill in thes holes, or just leave it. I do not have any experience with fiberglass, but i figure under an engine cover is as good a place as any to start.

Looking for thoughts on the necessity of taking this additional step in re-assembly.

I'm not even close to being qualified to answer this question, but I can say, pictures, pictures, pictures! Throw us a bone over here man! Upon instillation, do the screws get tight? Or do the just spin?

Unless it was lose and the hole are warbled out I wouldn't fill them back in, just put a drop of wood glue on the screws to keep them from working out and you should be fine.

Re: My Winter Project

For what you got going I believe there is a simple solution, buy a small can of fiberglass body filler,(not bondo) it goes by several names, Swiss glass, tigers hair, etc. its shredded up fiberglass roven material in a can with the resin already mixed, you just add a bit of the hardener that comes with it, fill the holes let dry sand / paint. drill some small pilot holes remount hinge. cheers.
