After a few nights of work, I got off the old junk stripped out of the boat. I was totally amazed at the number of screws that went through the hull. Make that rusted screws and bolts. The grindoff wheel on the rotozip got a good workout. Now I have a bit of patching to do.

1rst pic... All stripped down and the windshield off.

2nd pic. Windshield. Yea..its going to need a new one. It was being held together with screws. Any thoughts on where to get a new one? I'm going to ask around here in town. It's plastic, so I'm thinking that a plastic place might at least know.

3rd pic. The is the top. The black paint is peeling off. Whoever repainted it in the past didnt use a very good paint. Going to need to strip this all off. Best way?? Think a power sander...then by hand.

4th pic. I'm not going to paint the hull. I'm going to try to buff it up and make it look alot nice though. Best method/products for that??

5th pic. Holes in the hull. Here are two of the many holes in the side. 1/4" bolt holes. I'm going to pick something up to patch these with today. Whatever I get, it will need to be sandable, paintable, and watertight. Ideas or suggestions there??

Well...after one week I'm really getting to enjoy being a boat owner Someone told me that when I'm done I get to put it in the water. Is that really true?????

A few more pics and a few more questions.

These are all of the transom area. I far as I can tell, the wood is solid. Poked around it and didnt find any soft spots. The fiberglass in peeling bad though.

1rst pic. Nice rust on the outside. Going to try to get the off. Ideas??

2nd pic. See how the fiberglass is peeled back. Guess I'm going to learn how to do abit of fiberglass repair. Tips, suggestions here???

3rd pic. Other side of the transom. Not sure why it has that notch. Perhaps for cables or something. Should I leave it or fill it in? The whole top of the transom there, I can lift up the loose fiberglass but the wood underneath is solid.

Thanks ahead of time for everyones ideas and thoughts. It really really helps and hopefully someday I'll be able to help someone.

4th pic. Inside of the transom. Going to leave the big eyebolt in. That is where the outboard locked to the boat. Lots of peeling paint though.

5th pic. Was thinking of filling in the handhold. It is not fiberglassed inside it, just wood. Think it might be easier to just fill it in then try to get in covered up. Thoughts on this.

A few more pics and questions.

Pic 1 and 2 and 3. Seeks the peeling paint. This is on the inside of the boat. Thinking of taking my pressure washer today and washing it out real good and scraping it off. Good/bad idea. Would use a wide spray, not the stream blast.

Pic 4 and 5. I found some bad wood!!! This is up underneath of the front deck. Just above where the drill is in the 3rd pic. Its really flimsy wood and doesn't really lend any support. I was thinking if I could get them out in one piece, I could use them to make a template and cut new pieces out of composite wood. I need to look at them abit closer today.

What I could use today is some general ideas on the sanding. I'm thinking I need to sand the top, then inside, patch all the holes, then repair the fiberglass, then paint the inside, the top, then buff the hull in that order. Is that right??? With that said, should I blast that old paint off with some course sandpaper then smooth it up with finer and finer??

I'm off to boaters world today for the first time. Need to pick up a few things. What do you think of this stuff to clean up the hull.

yeah, thats a good start. and yes, there nothing like taken an old hag, giving her a bad, a little touch up, lipstick and make up, and having something you want to sleep next to. oh, yeah, i was talking about the boat. wait till you see the glances at the ramp.

Another good place in Portland for boat stuff is Fisherman's Marine and Outdoor. The Delta Park store has a better marine department than the one in Oregon City.

Transom Pics

The fiberglass on the inside of the transom had delaminated from the wood. So I pulled it out.

The 2nd pic is looking from the top down. See the gap. I need to grind this back. Now how do I do that?? Just use a regular old grinder and carefully inch it back with it?? And as far as the perimeter goes, should i grind all that back till its flush??

I had pressured washed the inside earlier and the wood at the bottom was a bit wet. There are lots of holes that still need to be patched. But the wood isnt rotten nor soft. Very good thing. Im going to it dry out good after I finish taking the fb out.

Now I get to learn to fiberglass. Any good sites on the net where I can learn or any tips to share.

i like to wet the transom down, and use the tip of a chainsaw and cut as close to the edge as i can, then the angle grinder. also a circular saw, or jig saw is can cut the top cap off to get the new wood down to fit.

I'm not following the chainsaw use at all. Is this when you are cutting the old wood out which I'm not doing. Jut want to grind and feather back the fiberglass.

i use the tip end of the chain saw and cut down the side and across the bottom to cut the glass, it get in hard to get places. wetting the area stops the dust.

but if you are sure you are to good glass and a good bond. by all means use the grinder and feather it back. still on the new glass reinforce the corners and floor.

this is one i just recently cut out with the chain saw. waiting for cooler, drier weather.

I ended up using a dremel with a cut off wheel. Worked pretty good to cut the fiberglass back to where it was adhered good to the transom. Now I'm going to use the dremel with a course sand disk to feather out the edges. I'll take a pic when im done

A couple of observations about boats and fixing them.

1. Sanding is alot like work.
2. Anything with the word "boat" or "marine" in it costs alot more money.

My nephew came by the other day. He used to work at a surf shop in San Diego building surf boards. Has lots of fiberglass experience for a 24 year old. He's going to come over on Sunday and help me patch everything up. Said it would be a piece of cake.

I need to replace the windshield. The frame is good but the plastic is shot. Where do I go?? TAP plastics??

Post up if you find a place. I have the same problem with my plastic, but I do have a replacement glass frame to put up if need be. Just seems like alot of work though.

Well...alot of sanding this weekend. Pretty much done with that but going to spend a couple evenings eying it and fine sanding. Then I will patch the holes.

I need to pickup the paint for the top. Suggestions??? Primer then paint. I want something that is easy to apply but looks real nice when all done.

Fiberglass work got pushed back to next weekend due to rain. Still not totally sure what resin and glass to get. Suggestions?? I also have a video coming from netflix of all places about fixing fiberglass and gelcoat on boats.

Waiting on a flywheel holding tool from sears so I can get the flywheel off. That should be here by the end of the week. Then I can see if it needs new coils.

Searching for seats right now too. It's pretty narrow inside, so what I'm leaning towards is two seats up front on 9" pedestals. The seats are 15" wide. In the back, probably put two more in for fishing. Or a bench. Need to make a decision about this soon. Idea and suggestions again????

I have a seat of two, two tone brown fake leather seats that you could have for 20 bucks in great condition if that’s the color you want. No pedestals though. I can bring them as far as Hillsboro. you could build a storge box under them.

Can you take a pic of them. Hillsboro is over a hour drive from my place by the way. I'm on the far edge of gresham. But I might be out there later in the week. Found a windshield place out off of 185th.

Right now, I'm leaning towards these.
