Well - it runs- had the lower off today, no water in the gearcase, pumps at first startup then it stops pumping. Took 30 pulls to get it going. Ran it for 2 minutes, after 30 seconds water stopped coming out the exhaust hole. Shut it down, put compressed air up through the exhaust then restarted it, started pumping again then ran out of gas. I filled up the tank then it wouldn't restart. So I decided to call it a day and put it on the stand. I'm thinking at this point it's getting water in the cylinder so I pulled a plug and pulled it over a couple of times to check well wouldn't ya know it the friggen thing fires up. I put the plug back in, starts first pull?????WTF, i'm thinking a powerhead gasket issue at this point...

Re: My zephyr

could be a blockage in the water jacket, - water circulates, stops, backs up, builds pressure, squirts water in a cylinder. bad head gasket?

Re: My zephyr

My 1949 Zephyr does a similar thing too, it will pump water for a while, and then once it gets warm it slows to a trickle. I tend to beleive it may be pressure building up from heat making steam in the cooling jackets? Anyway, mine will stall sometimes too, then re-start and run fine. On the water however, it pumps water fine as long as I'm not trolling. Does anyone here know if the impeller is metal on these engines? See picture below of Zephyr:

Re: My zephyr

Yours is a 49 isn't it, different lower unit which has the rubber impeller. I had mine off yesterday, metal impeller is still in tact. I was told to pull the prop and try in the barrel, worth a shot.
