after trying numerous things including adjusting valves , removing flappers, i removed the dust cover on the bottom of the bell housing . The 2" wide part of the flywheel just to the inside of the teeth has a spot that is rubbing shiny on it. it is only a spot about a 1/4"wide towards the inside of the 2"portion all the way around. It makes perfect since because on high revs and at wot it made alot of noise . Is the plate flexing, hitting starter, any suggestions or will it just clearance itself eventually , maybe bad endplay but i cant move the crank back and forth

There are some core plugs at the back of the block but if they were loose you would have a bilge full of oil and/or water. Flywheel loose perhaps or something was picked up by the flywheel and deposited up between the flywheel and block?

I have a problem very similar now myself, with a 3.0. I just replaced my coupler, bolted everything back in place remounted the engine and had it professionally aligned. I put it in the water 4 days ago and it ran great. I took it for a long haul from where it was launched to the dock, and everything was fine.

Then the night before last I noticed a new noise. It seemed almost intermittent at low rpm but got louder and more frequent over the next day. I had it at idle at the dock and poked my ear in behind and around the bell housing and that it definitely where it is coming from.

I have no oil leaks anywhere so I am thinking that something may have came loose from the coupler. Anyway, I haven't yet pulled the motor, but I just got it ready today to be pulled, waiting on my buddy with the hoist.

Just a question, other than maybe one of the nuts wasn't tight enough and vibrated off one of the studs, is it possible that a stud could have came off too? Just trying to get some ideas on what to expect when I actually remove the bell housing...

Thanks, Jason
