mysterious piece

i was switching the lower unit on my '86 force 35 hp and a ruber tube looking piece fell out when i took the lower unit out. its about 1 1/2 inches long it looked like it went on the top of the drive shaft but im not sure i ran it without it and it worked just fine is it important and how do i put it back on

That is a rubber piece that goes on the top of your drive shaft and fits in the end of a brass ring on the drive shaft. all it does is keep the drive shaft splines grease from flying out, without the boot it might cause your drive shaft to get stuck in the engine block (corrosion) nothing a BFH cant fix

im trying to put it back on does it go over the brass ring or on top of it and do i just push the drive shaft back up after or?

The rubber fits just on top and 1/8 inch inside the brass ring lip.
