Mystery Bolt!?

I recently had my engine removed by a shop in order to free some broken starter bolts (that's a whole nother story...) After having the engine replaced and repaired, we brought the boat out on the lake for a couple trips. After this I opened up the engine bay and saw this bolt laying in the bottom of the bilge. I search all around the engine looking for where it may have come from but couldn't find a spot to stick it back in.

It looks very similar to the bolt heads of the engine mount however the icon on the top is slightly different and non of the bolts are missing in the mounts.

Do you think I am missing the spot where this bolt belongs or could it just be an extra bolt that was dropped from the shop that removed and replaced my engine?

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm guessing it's a 3/8-16 bolt which could be a number of things from front accessory to motor mounts to flywheel housing. Take a look around and see if anything is missing. If you're worried about it take it back to the shop and have them check. If you have evidence of poor workmanship, it's a lot easier to prove fault if a problem occurs. Also better to get it fixed before it becomes a problem.

I found it!

After another thorough examination of the motor, I found the hole for the bolt! It appears to be a support arm of sorts for the water pump hose.



New question: the end of the support arm (circled in red) does not have a hole in it. Is the water pump just suppose to rest on this support arm without being secured to it? The end of the arm seems to be full of some type of thick grease or tar.

The end of that support arm is supposed to have a rubber piece shaped like Napoleon's hat on it. It is to stop the pump casing from rotating with the crank shaft. If your engine has been sprayed with corrosion protective it has probably gone gooey and disintegrated or spilled any gas on it. You need to get a new rubber piece and install it on the arm, and avoid getting the corrosion protective spray or gas on it.

Got it! That's what that gooey crap is!
