Mystery Parts - What the heck?

I have an 88 force 125 that would set off the overheating buzzer from time to time at slower speeds. I decided to replace the water pump to see if that would help. I got the lower unit off, replaced the impellar, housing, seals, and gasket. The old stuff didn't look all that bad so for whatever reason I decided to look into the pee holes to see if there was any blockage. I saw something in there that didn't look right so I tried to remove the rubber boot on the inside of the middle unit that goes to the pee holes. I couldn't get it off so I removed the front of the middle unit and then pulled the boot off. The boot has a tension clamp on the outside and on the inside had a hard plastic ring with a spring behind it. Those looked fine and seemed to fit together properly but I didn't see what whatever caught my eye to begin with. I then shined the flashlight into the middle unit hole that the boot goes over and inside there are two plastic tubes, just laying in there rattling around. I was able to get them out through the hole with a screwdriver but I have no idea what they are or where they go. The tubes are roughly 1/2 inch around and 3 inches long. They are smooth up until the one end where roughly the last 3/4 inch is tapered and cut into four segments. One of them has all four segments still attatched but clearly worn. Two of the segments are broken off on the other one. My guess is that the tapered segmented ends are supposed to fit into something but where? So, the questions of the day are what are these two tubes, where do they go, and what do they do. The engine runs pretty darn good, carbs overflow from time to time after I shut it off, but other than that and the buzzer problem, all seemed well. Any help would be great. The water pump was easy but now I'm in over my head. Thanks.

Those tubes are part of the idle relief system. The manual shows them but does not show or explain how they are installed. Mine fell down into the midleg and I am not about to disassemble the engine to fish them out.

The engine will run fine without them.

Re: Mystery Parts - What the heck?

I have a 1988 125 Force. Last time I had my power head off I noticed the two plastic tubes you mentioned laying inside the housing. They're called standtubes. Item 25 in the attached link. Appears they are no longer available. http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury_parts/1258/140.cfm

To access that area, you have take the power head off. The standtubes just snap into place vertically. It appears that the standtubes control the flow of water and exhaust that exit out through the exhaust boot????? Not sure about that though. I doubt that not having them in place will have much of an impact on engine operation, but again, I'm not an expert.

When I had my power head off, I threaded the two holes and replaced the plastic tubes with two pieces of 3/8 pipe threaded brass tubes.

Re: Mystery Parts - What the heck?

Thanks for the help guys. My manual doesn't show them or even mention them that I can tell. As long as there are no known problems with leaving them off then that's how it will stay. Thanks again.
