Re: mystery problem..140 v4..e140txcdc

faztbullet...I hear ya man..I was thinking the same thing. I had joneg with me and we looked at the carbs, we made sure they were spotless.. and we did take the side plate off as well..

I guess i could try snugging it up more or get a different side cover gasket, but the ones that cae with the kit are pretty thick gasket so I think they were good but will check them again...

the only problem I see is its both carbs on one side..could it be both gaskets??..sure I guess..is it likely?..I dont know..

someone said to check the pick up in the tank...i havent yet becasue i assumed it would show issues on all carbs and not just one.. what's your take on the pickup or flywheel magnets causing any issues?

Where did you get the rebuild kit. I have read on some posts where guys have had issues with some kits. Some cited needle and seat not operating properly. As a result they were recommending OEM kits. Don't know if this will help or not just thought I'd mention it.

I notice those side cover gaskets, yeh a bit on the thick side.
Possibly ..if the plates are cranked down too tight the gasket may be blocking off the internal passage.

I got the rebuild on line. I crossed my original numbers to the superceeded numbers. They are BRP parts as the packaging is, or as I assume, the real deal..

Jonesg, the side plates are thick i agree but the recess for the passages it covers are deep and there is a rim as well. When we pulled off the side covers it had the imprint of the raised channels in the gasket..so i have to assume it sealed.

I would go through carbs again, its a pain but its hard to see how it could be anything else. Compare the 2 bad carbs to the good ones, especially the float needle seats. Or swap the needle, float and seats over and see if the problem follows the parts. Gotta be something like that.

I looked at the carbs again..i took the side covers off and re-examined them..as far as i could tell they were sealing well and not blocking anything off.

I called the shop and dropped off the boat today. With any luck i'll have her back purring like a kitten.

We will all know what the outcome was and while I do appreciate all the help given to me thus far, I finally had to throw in the towel and let the proffesional put his eye on it.

I'll keep eveyone posted as to what it was..we will all learn something in a weeks time I suppose..hopefully not longer..

Thanks agin for all the input and help.

if you really think its the carb, why not just pick up a new (used) pair? gotta be a boat wreckers near ya, or ebay.

of all the other money you've wasted in the electrical stuff, whats another few bucks for a pair of known good carbs

when i get the boat back i'll let you know what i wasted..

Are you sure you have ''Floats" and not ''Sinks" ?
Sorry, "sinks" would flood........
I had a case of needles sticking. 3 on the starboard side. NOT oem parts......won't do that again. I only want to repair 6 carbs ONCE every 4 years

Honestly, I also feel it's carbs as you state that the problem follows the carbs
I am still fighting plastic bowls that "smile"

I tend to agree with you all on the carb thing... it makes no other sense that it could be anything else..but after looking at these multiple times, I just had enough..

I put a straight edge on the bowls..they were straight. I checked gaskets , o rings, needls, seats, floats... I felt like the movie "groundhog day"..reliving the experienece over and over...

My hope is that its something as simple as that...

the kit gaskets where very thick..or thicker than what i removed..its is possible that they were not letting me get a good seal, but i never saw fuel coming out so i assumed they were..

"it is what it is" as they say...

Re: mystery problem..140 v4..e140txcdc

Its boating season...the shop is 2 weeks behind on anything they get in the yard. After sitting almost 2.5 weeks, they are finally working on it. Last i heard, they were going over everythig I did to be sure it was right. and then in the test tank to figure out why the 2 cylinders were not responsive.

Last conversation was Saturday. The mechanic said the vro was pumpin too much oil, and that 2 cylinders were not responding. All of my work checked out good and correct, so i was happy, becasue I followed all of this sites suggestions.

I asked him to do the stats while he was at it..I was told I wuld have the bat back in my pssesin by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Ill keep you posted once I get the verdict on what it was.

Thanks to all!

UPDATE: mystery problem..140 v4..e140txcdc

UPDATE: mystery problem..140 v4..e140txcdc

Finally, after all this time and a backlog as long as your arm...my boat guy called me today.

Verdict... He checked everything I did, with the help of all of you here on Iboats as well as JonesG for stopping by and assisting... gratefully appreciate all the help. All checked out perfectly!! The only issue was timing and my vro was pumping a little more oil than he expected. The vro flow rate was checked and was spot on (i rebuilt the vro myself!! ..) Everything else was perfect.

Evidently, as I have read here, after changing your powerpack IT IS IMPORTANT to re-check your timing. I did not check my timing to see where it sat before I decided to use the Joe Reeves method. In the end, my timing was way off..by something like 6-8 degrees.

I dont know why it was that off, when I did the Joe reeves method, my reading which I thought were correct (and i had a second set of eyes on it) it appeared dead on to the instructions. I can only surmize that I did not do it correctly. I had assumed I did, which is why I was chasing my tail on this one. By spraying fuel into the carbs it was picking up becasue of the delayed spark i guess? or maybe i was introducing more fuel so when spark actually occured i was boosting it a bit making it appear that it was a fuel issue?

NOTE: When you hear folks on this site ask "did you check spark, fuel and compression?" add timing and follow these steps and you will find your problem. We are quickly side tracked to look elsewhere because we think it can't be that easy..we will look for other things becasue we think we know what we are doing..and we do..but its so easy to overlook stuff, and well...it took a month at the shop and wasted fishing time for me to hear.."the timing was off"... lesson learned.

I'll be picking up my baby tomorrow or Saturday...if this hurricane we are expecting does what they say its going to do, I won't be hitting the water till next week to give her a good run. What the heck..they do say its better fishing after a storm right?..A hurricane is a good storm isnt it?..

Thanks again to everyone on here who provided input..i couldn't have got to 99% of fixing this myself without all of you.

Thanks again!
Rich
