Re: Mystery still not solved

Speedwrench, you're way, way above my basic amateur mechanic standards, but I share puzzlement about how reed can cause water in cylinder?

Seems likely the reed got sucked into cylinder and damaged water jacket somehow to allow water entry. I'd be tracing the water jacket path from the reed through No. 1 cylinder to exhaust to find the damage. Not familiar with your engine, but if possible it might be simpler to pull any water jacket covers and test for cracks there.

Alternatively, would this work? Assuming that water is being sucked in on downstroke, and crack is open cold, could you put a dye or trace in coolant and crank motor to suck it in and then inspect cylinder with borescope?

Re: Mystery still not solved

Thanks to everyone who replied. Will post results when get some reeds.

My answer to how water getting into #1 cyl: When #1 piston is at bdc both the intake and exhaust ports are uncovered, and #'s 2 or 3 are on the suction stroke. With a reed missing, it would cause a low pressure in #1 crankcase, and would pull the exhaust back thru #1 cylinder into the crankcase.
Since the exhaust is cooled by water injection, there would be water vapor/mist in the common exhaust chamber at a higher pressure to be pulled back thru the cylinder, as evidenced by the carbon and water in the #1 intake transfer port mentioned in first post.

Tinkerer: Don't feel there is any leaks in water jackets. Pressure tested them and inspected with strong light and magnifying glass when head and exhaust cover off. Inspected all internals with bore scope, no damage evident. Think all problems are the reed. That in it's self would kill #1 even without the water. Good news is if reeds not all the problem, now I can pull power head in less than 10 minutes, and have head, exhaust cover, and intake off in less than another 5.
Practice, practice, practice. (and a good air ratchet)
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks again

Good theory...interested to see if it plays out the way you envision it.

Re: Mystery still not solved

I just solved my water in #1 problem, and if you are still getting water, this may help you. #1 cylinder suffered a detonation which took alot of the top of the piston and rings off. A couple of small pieces made it past the piston and when the piston came down it hammered them through the base metal at the bottom of the cylinder. Cooling passages run through there and therefore it sprung a leak. I had the cylinder bored, and even the machine shop did not notice this. Wish they had..but it was impossible to detect without pulling the new piston back out.

Maybe a piece of your reed valve lodged under your piston and got hammered through the base as happened in my case. You haven't posted in a while..so maybe your problem is fixed, but thought I would let you know in case it isn't.

Thanx 77J175, will update you on results if EVER get parts. Mine had no damage anywhere and water jackets held pressure test with head and exhaust cover back on, so going with reeds.
For a town as full of boats as Corpus Christi is, trying to buy parts is a total waste of time and 100+ miles round trip.

Mercury Dealer #1:"I can't look up Force parts."
Me: You don't have to look them up, I have the part numbers."
Dealer: "I can't look up Force numbers."
Me: "They're Mercury part numbers not Force."
Dealer: "But they are Force parts so I can't look them up."
Me: "Never mind."

Mercury Dealer #2: "what kind of parts do you need.
Me: "Force reeds and a few gaskets.
Dealer: I don't know how to look up Force."
Me: "The're Mercury part numbers."
Dealer: I don't know how to look up Force."
Me: Well, does anyone here know how?"
Dealer: "The guy that might know how is selling a boat now, so maybe if you came back in coupla hours he might have time."
Me: "Naw, think I'll just wait till I need a new boat and come back then."
Dealer: "OK"

And these are men in their 30's& 40's, not kids at Autozone. Sure makes you want to buy a new boat there. Can you spell service???

Re: Mystery still not solved

Thanks to all who replied.
IT'S FIXED !!!!!!
Shattered reed was evidently the only problem.
Getting the parts turned in the normal FUBAR but now it runs and idles better than it ever has. It will idle @500 now and not die when shift into gear. Always had to keep around 1k before and not leave idling in grear long or would die. Since didn't ever find any pieces of reed or any damage wonder how long it has been shedding small pieces? Now I can race 4th weekrnd and not feel guilty. NOT!
Thanks again for the help.
