Was looking over my engine under the cover and I noticed some oil around the back cover release. When I got the cover off I notice a small rubber hose coming from the bottom of the engine block and laying on the bottom. The other end isn't connected to anything and some small amounts of oil came out it. Just trying to figure out this is called and should oil be coming out of it?

I have a 1998 50hp Johnson. Mod No = J50TSLECC Don't have the manual but am currently trying to get one so can't identify what this is on my own.

If there is oil coming out, then could it be the pulse hose or if that came off would the fuel pump work properly at all? And just a quickie on what the recirculation hose does. Couldn't find much on it

The recirculation hose attaches to the bottom of air sliencer and gos to the bottom of crankcase, it recycles over flow oil/fuel mixture to be burnt in crankcase.

Thanks for the help. I am really learning a lot here. My engine has been serviced within the past year but recently I have been having some problems. I checked the plugs and noticed they were wet fouled pretty bad and noticed a lot of deposits inside the cylinders. Could this be due to the fact that this recirculation hose (assuming that is what it is) has come off? My engine has been running fine wide open but been very temperamental to crank and idle smoothly which led to this search to begin with.

Based on what I understand about this recirculation system, with the hose disconnected then extra air is entering my carbs as well as the crankcase itself leaning out my mixture as well as fizzing my fuel some. Does this also mean that extra oil is mixing with my gas in the crankcase causing the fouling and deposite problem? Hope I am close.

You might want to look at your VRO pump and make sure there is a oil line running to each carb. If one of those lines come off you could do major damage by running it. Usually a loose or broken recirculation hose does not cause a running problem, just a mess at times.

But if my spark plugs are wet fouled and it seems like there is some gunk in my cylinders, plus some extra smoke on restarts (which I forgot to mention) wouldn't this mean that my engine is getting to much oil instead of not enough? Is there anyway to check the vro pump to ensure that it is working properly? I feel that it is working but how can you be sure that the mixtures are correct?

Instead of trying to diagnose myself since I know very little I will just ask for advise. My engine will crank fine the first time I go out for the day. It doesn't idle very well and cranking it for the rest of time on the water is tedious. Ultimately I have to rev the engine up in neutral for it to stay cranked which also puts out a quick plum of smoke. Ideas?
