While fishing this weekend I pulled my pull rope to start my motor and it got stuck in the out position. I couldn't get it to go back in. I finally figured out that the end of the spring coil had managed to get pulled through the hole in it's metal housing and jammed it all up. I managed to get it apart and now it works ok except it doesn't get quite all the way back in after a pull. Do I just need to get more tension on the spring before putting it back together? Or is there something else I am missing.
Now I have a bigger problem. Apparently when putting the pull rope assembly back in I managed to break a piece of the motor that is unrelated to the pull rope. It is a white plastic piece kind of in the shape of a U. It is attached to a metal linkage that I think goes to a valve in the carb. In any case the motor idles fine with this piece broken but when I give it the gas I get next to nothing which makes me think that the motor isn't getting the message to give more gas flow. I need to get this part replaced and if I knew the name of the part it would probably help when I got to the marine store. Thanks for any help.

Mike

Hi Mike....

I've got a 15 hp of about the same vintage as your 9.9 (their almost the same). As for the recoil, I had to do the exact same thing for mine... take it apart and bend a new hook on the end of the spring to catch on the base. Yes, all you need to do is to add another couple turns of tension onto the spring and it'll be as good as new.

As for the other part, I don't really know what you mean, and I don't have my motor handy to look. You might look here (see the link below). They have exploded parts diagrams and you can probably find out what it's called, and maybe part #. Someone posted passed this link onto me when I posted a Q about my motor and I've found it useful.

link for parts diagrams

Also, I found a great article on the web about maintenance/repair of motors like ours. Have a look, it's a great resource I think.
article on maintaining and repair of 9.9/15 hp OMC's

Take care & I hope this helped.

Brent

oh, and I forgot to mention, you don't need to take the recoil apart to add the tension on the spring. Just take the handle off the rope and wind the whole rope onto the spool. Then twist spool to preload some tension onto it. While holding it with one hand (to keep the tension on it), fish out the end of the rope with a screwdriver or piece of wire etc and pull the end back out the front plate. Put handle back on.

Should be a <5 minute job.

HTH

Brent

Brent,
Thanks for the good information and links. I found the part I need. It turned out to be a cam follower for the carb. It should be an easy fix. The websites should help me out a good deal for future reference too. Thanks again.

Mike
