Name or part # for MC-1 Hook Thing?

I need to replace the holder-upper hook thing on my MC-1. (Don't ask why.). The metal hook that goes between the lifting loop in the top cover of the stern drive to the transom, to hold it up in the raised position.

I can't find one by searching, but it is probably because I don't know the proper name for it.

I posted some photos of it in this post: link

Can someone help me? At minimum I need its name, but a part # or a source would be great.

I assume they do as long as there is not a leak somewhere, and the hook is a mechanical back up?

The boat came with this hook when I bought it a couple of years ago. Was this not standard equipment and usage back in the day? I know later models did not come with a lifting loop.

Best to use something on the trim rams, or tie it up from the cavitation plate

That item is the Top cap

So you don't remember a hook being used back in the '70's? Or later but with drives sold in the '70's?

If you didn't already, please look at the photos in my original post link. (For some reason I can't add them here, sorry.)

I'm just trying to do the right thing. If the right thing is not use the hook that came with the boat, that would be fine. But it seems odd that that would be the result since the boat was made that way.

I believe your mixing lift points with hold points

The eyelet is there to lift and support the drive to remove and replace. The eyelet is not there to hold the drive up during transport. Using a steel hook to hold the drive up puts much more load on it than that would ever be engineered to do so for transport.

Thanks for your attention to my problem. Is your advice based more on theory or do you remember what the steel hook was intended to be used for back in the 70's? The "ground truth" is this hook came with the boat, and at least the prior owner and I have been using it to backup the rams in support during trailering and storage for decades.

Earlier MC1 has the hook. Eliminated later year’s because it wasn’t really needed. It was used for lifting the outdrive off for service. It’s not a trailer support. If you need to hold your drive up, run a ratchet strap from one transom eye to the other under the outdrive and tighten it up. Drive won’t go anywhere

Yeah the really old ones had a hook my grandfathers 1966 Pen Yan did I think was made to store the drive all the way up. These were the first drives with tilt (not trim ) one hose going to cylinders… tended to leak
Down.

All three MC1's I have for my 1976 (the original 1976, one that's the same age or a bit older, and one that's a later build, all 888's) have the hole. And I am very grateful for it (I've been in outdrive heck the last month, but that's my other thread's story). Probably was a pain to die cast though, which is likely why they eliminated it.

Btw I looked and did not see the hook on any of the parts diagrams . the hook would latch into the top of transom housing , had to be careful to un hook it before dropping the drive… that how the eyelet on our got cracked off

Thank you for that very helpful information. It appears the hook as a drive support in transit was a thing they did for a few years in the 70's, then decided it was not a great idea after all. By today's standards it is not a good idea, and it won't be easy to find a replacement. That's really all I need to know.

Volvo calls them a trailering bracket and though I can't confirm this visually as noting shows an image online, I suspect the Merc part number/s for the Trailering Hook are/were 86459, 86459A1, 86459A2 which all three numbers jumps to the plastic clips for the rams for the MC-I, R, MR, Alpha, Bravo & Vazer drives.

Mercury-MerCruiser 86459 TRAILERING HOOK has been superseded to a new part number. (86459A1 TRAILERING HOOK, 86459A2 TRAILERING HOOK)
The newest part number is 817019Q2 -click here- to see the newest superseded part
Please note the new superseded part is a functional replacement and may look different from the original part.

I'm not old enough to really know if the trailering hook came standard with the engine/transom/drive application when buying the boat or if it was an added accessory for extra trailering safety of that era but I'd have to suspect it was an accessory for after the sale in the parts department...$ ;)...

If one happened to have an old 1960/70's owners' operation and maintenance manual, it may help indicate its usage as standard or not since that was part of the main question/s.
