OK Guys,
I called this part a "rub rail" and was quickly corrected. I was told the rub rail is the rail around the boat at the deck line. Could someone PLEASE tell me what the real nautical term is?
Thanks,
Ed

I say it is a rub rail that was added by a previous owner for loading it on a trailer or a boat lift.

i is a rub rail, added probably to keep the boat off the dock, that was lower. say a floating dock. yes it was added, as it does not match the other rub rail.

Pretty sure it's original. It's missing it's vinyl insert however.:(

Bond-o got it.

Spray rail or secondary chine.

Two purposes. Spray control and stiffens side.

Thought a spray rail was located at the bow. Near the waterline.

Yep, that is a rub rail. Check out the MFG in my signature pics, it has one too, and its OEM.

Spray rail, that's what they were first installed as back in the 1930's, 40's, & 50's.

Technically, it's a type of permanent fender and so is the rub rail. We all know we can buy temporary docking fenders that we throw over the side to keep our boats from being beat up, your's is just a permanent.

A spray rail would need to be located more near the waterline if it was going to be effective at speed. My 91 Starcraft has a spray rail that the manufacturer calls a lift strake.

I was always told that it was a "high water fender"... common on boats sold in areas where there was significant tide movement.

Don't see many down here as we only get about 1.2ft of water movement during normal tide cycles.
