Re: nasty storm for the atlantic north east

The funny thing about this 'storm', is that it has not formed yet and is based on computer models. Snow in the Boston area is not supposed to start until around noontime, but many schools and business have thrown in the towel just to be on the safe side, so that there is not the traffic snarl during the evening commute that we had a few years ago . . .

For me it is kind of a bummer, 'cuz I had a weekend of boat maintenance planned. Messing around with the snowblower just won't be the same as installing a new VHF radio

Yup ....... jumping the gun here too. All the schools are closed and we are just receiving a dusting so far......however, there already have been multiple car pile ups. I can't believe the stupidity of some drivers. :(

Re: nasty storm for the atlantic north east

Looks like I'll be tuning up the snow blower tonight. I 'was' going to head to Cape Cod on Friday night for some work on the house and boat, but it looks like that will have to wait.

My Poulan 27" snow thrower is definitely the most mistreated piece of machinery I own. It hasn't been out of the garage in 2 years. This moning I spent a half hour 'exhuming' it from its grave under piles of crap. It has an electric starter, but I wanted to make sure the motor wasn't seized. Checked the oil, gassed it up, yanked the pull starter... and it started! Ran it for a half hour before I shut it down.

I really didn't deserve that much 'love'...

Sometimes you just have to man up for your own (and your families) well being, and do what you think is right. Not what your employer says.

Done that too...
My actual boss is a swell guy. His motto for this type of situation is "use your best judgment". As the contractor, we try to fulfill the requests of the powers that be to the best of our abilities, but are not expected by our actual employer to put ourselves in too much risk to come in, or stick around while the ships hitting the fan.

I'll probably stick around till around 2 or 3 (depending on what it looks like out), then take off. At least the good thing this morning is the commute was like driving in on a Saturday..... ;)

About the same conditions as '78....

Just started snowing in the Boston area at 10:00 AM . . . So, probably a good call for most schools and many businesses to cancel for today.

Re: nasty storm for the atlantic north east

As I posted on my Facebook:

The storm has started. I guess I better go over my storm checklist.
1. Propane for bbq.
2. Beer, cause I like it.
3. Water, in case I run out of beer.
4. Rum, to keep me warm.
5. Blankets, in case I run out of rum.
6. Moose meat, for the bbq.
7. Candles, lots of them. Except I don't have anything to light them with cause I quit smoking.

But seriously, it's suppose to be a bad one, but we can't do anything about it so we can try to keep our spirits up. Good luck everyone. :cold::facepalm:

So far so good. Still have power. 12" @ 10pm with 35mph gusting 60mph. Should end by 9am with about 2 ft+. Bay up to the street but no higher so far. Visibility is less than 50 ft. Gonna need my sleep for cleanup in the morning. Goodnight!

Looks like the accumulation predictions were pretty much on target . . . Here is what things look like out the back slider this morning . . .

My old - 1985 vintage - snowblower was giving me fits last night, as it had a tank of 2-year-old gas in it, and wouldn't stay running. It took a while to burn that off and get some fresh gas in there. There was about 10" when I did the driveway last night, so there should be another foot or so waiting this morning. . .

Stay warm and safe everyone. We just got the edge of it as it went past us on Thursday night. Nothing major at all other than some freezing rain and stupid drivers.

Build a snowman! Build a snowman!!!

I've been watching that storm on the radar yesterday and this morning and it's a vey slow moving storm, mainly just spinning and dumping in the same spot.

Break out the Irish coffee and blueberry muffins!!!!:joyous:

Re: nasty storm for the atlantic north east

Quit work after 2 hours yesterday. Driving was getting really hairy. Went to my shop and resurrected the snowblower. I haven't needed it since 2010. Started on the second pull. We got about 14" on the ground. Went to a buddies place and cleared his snow. He's only got one leg so moving this much snow is hard for him. Cleaned out a couple of neighbors and the sidewalks. Got started on mine and would you know it, I blew a belt. Now the plows have gone through. Back to the shop this morning to replace the belt and start all over again. Maybe I'll do mine first this time.....maybe.

Around 20"-24" here. I made a path to the cars. Now son is digging out the vehicles while I sip coffee and watch thru the glass from the warm side. I imagine it will take most of the day to clear everything before it turns to ice tonite. I'll relieve him in an hour. Just five miles north of me received 32" and there are vehicles stranded on every road. County has a lot of work ahead. News station has scores of people calling in on cell phones from their cars who spent the night in them. Hoping everyone makes it out okay.
