1988 5.0XL MERCRIUSER ALPHA DRIVE.I have a spare alpha drive and I decided to install it when I could not find the time to service the original drive... after I installed it I did not have reverse.Checked everything possible and wound up needing a shift cable adjustment.Cant say I ever heard of this.Planning on putting original o/d back on and wondering if I may need a cable adjustment again.Any thoughts?? Ayuh,... Howdy Charlie,...

Donno what you've got goin' on,...
There shouldn't be any reason to readjust the shift cable, between 2 different drives...
Unless 1 of those drives has an Issue...

Did you separate the halves of the drive at all? Or maybe someone before you did, and didn't have both in forward postion when the were bolted back together.

Nope,no issues wih the drive and it was put back together after servicing perfectly.I was once told by a mercruiser tech to not swap my port and stbd drives when reinstalling them after servicing.I did not ask why??.Charlie

Like Eric said. If the shift lever was accidentally moved before the drives were reassembled you can lose reverse. Thats about the only way I can think it woult happen.
