Help me out here please, I'm dumb about all these new fangled GPS systems. What I want is just your run of the mill GPS to measure MPH and maybe mark a couple good fishing spots, preferably something just handheld that I can take hiking biking and fishing. I also want to verify the speedometer in my boat, anything out there cheap like around 50 bucks?

115.65$ thru the iboats store...(i just checked :D) for the garmin 72.
Im kinda in the market myself. was thinking about getting a combo fish finder/gps, but the cheapest i have found was around $380. if i buy a handheld and a separate fish finder, looks like i can save about 100 or so.
just wondering how long do the batteries last on a handheld unit?

I bought the Lowrance H20 for $169 at Bass Pro. I picked it because it had a bigger screen than the Garmin. I've been really pleased with it so far. I also sprung for the $100 for the lake map software.

Garmin Etrex should do it. $99.00 I use it on boat, bike, powered parachute, hiking.

I have This One. It is about as bare bones as you can get but it measures MPH and can mark waypoints. No map though so the waypoints are on a blank screen. Basically you can see the direction to where you have set the point but not what is in between you and the point. It is cheap though.

I have the Garmin 76, which has US maps and Lake charts. Charts and maps are extra, and at about $350 for the unit itself, pretty expensive. However, I use it in the car, boat, and even walking, and it works great for all those things, so you may feel better about spending more if you need all those things. Otherwise, take the advice here and grab one of the other units for under $100- you will still be able to mark fishing spots and monitor speed easily. I love the speedometer on the unit so much that I don't even look at the boat speedo anymore- it helps me keep track of how fast I am pulling the kids skiing. And you can track your mileage, which I think is great- found that I was getting about 3 MPG this summer.

I have a Garmin eTrex LegendC. Map memory in the LegendC is a little low. The new LegendCx uses MicroSD card to hold maps. Much larger memory. Costs about $250 US. You will also need a map set. The base map set gives highway maps only. The "City" maps are about $125 or you can get Topo maps for about $75. Battery life is about 20 hours. I bought mine from gps city ("www.gpscity.com"). Lifetime warrantee from Garmin. You may want to get a remote power cable to run the unit off from a 12v outlet. I use mine boating, bicycling, and driving. For a mount, look at the RAM assisted suction cup mounts. They are moveable from one vehicle to the next.

I have a garmin emap, that I am going to be putting on ebay. It is a handheld, that runs off 2 AA batteries, or 12volt adaptor. It has Cd with all street maps of US, and CD of Garmins lights and water ways. It will do all you are looking for.

If you are interested I'll sell to you instead of listing on ebay.
