I know its been a while guys but I got tired of the same old how do I---??? Floor, transom ETC!!!
I purchased from E-Bay a new Teleflex NFB steering helm. The other brand was a Bad deal. Having problems turning the wheel and is not the cable or motor.

Turns out I bought a tilt helm!!! I was a bit disappointed. However I did get the til portion for a very good price too. So not to unhappy.
Heres my delema. I need the backplate for the helm portion. The guy said he did not have this part of the helm.

I will post a few pic.

Re: Need a bit of steering help here

Ok contacted a local shop and did not hear back. Then I contacted Teleflex.
They are sending me the part.
Teleflex came through.
The "UFLEX" Accutech people would not even help with their system.
Will do a step by step of how to install tilt helm.

Did you buy the Uflex off of eBay? I was just wondering if it was a cheaper made steering system. I was thinking of upgrading my steering from the cable pulley system and was curious about the quality of the brand names. Thanks for the insight.

You can't beat Teleflex, for reliability, and service. just like Realgun said, Teleflex came thru for him, and they always have for me. you can actually call them, and get help.

No I got it from a dealer. The price was 40 bucks cheaper than Teleflex units.
I did not have the reciept but was less than the 2 year warranttee and Uflex would not help at all. I called.

The unit worked well for a year then gets tight. It turns a bit then tightens up so you have to move it the opposite direction then back again. It gets real frustating.
I then dropped the rack off the helm and the engine moves easily and the cable is still in the rack and that moves easily also.
So I know it in the NFB helm unit.
Only thing I can think of is I did tap it a few time with a hammer to get the steering wheel on and off three times.
I wanted a new wheel and the original install the rack was upside down my bad!!! Steering was real fun let me tell you. I wanted to go left and the boat went right!:$

What's the trick to getting the steering wheel off the shaft? Mine's from a 97 Bayliner Cierra Exp Cruiser. The steering wheel is press fit on, then held with a center nut. There are no threaded holes to use an auto steering wheel puller.

Any suggestions?

I just did this yesterday. And I had the same problem. I came up with the following:

A little heat on the center shaft. Then a prybar against the inside of the wheel and the top of the center shaft. Once it "pops" it'll slide right off.

A BFH!
What i was told and it works well is to back the nut off the wheel till its flush with the top of the shaft. This prevents you smashing the threads. Then pull at the top and bottom of the wheel at the same time. Hint: use you knee. Then tap the center of the shaft with a hammer. It usually just pops off with a "gentle" tap.

It worked for mee but I think the Uflex unit was either flimsy or just plain junk.

Thanks for the replies. Got around to the wheel again. Used a ball joint splitter and drove it in until there was light pressure. One small tap on the center shaft and it popped right off. (No heating required.)

An update on the sticky problem.

Cool eh?:$

I have a "Complete step by step" on the shareaproject site for you.

I ended up replacing the whole steering again. New cable and helm. Better not stick again.
