Hey Everyone. Well, I'm going to go ahead and admit that I rarely work on mercury outboards. I've got a few Johnson/Evinrude motors that I tinker around with. So, I'm not formiliar with how to figure out the year of a mercury. I hope someone on here can help me out with this. A friend of mine asked me to see if I could get his motor running. I believe the problem is a bad coil, so I want to go ahead and order a new coil for it. The motor is a 20hp and the serial number is 3884074. It looks to me like it is either a 60's or 70's model, but I hope someone on here can help me get closer to the truth. Also, where can I order a coil for this motor? I tried looking on the i-boats website, but I couldn't find a range of serial numbers that mine fit into. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bret,

Mercs don't use year for parts... The engine serial number is all you need. Take that to a Merc dealer and he'll find any part you need....

The Merc part# is 339-5288T2. Available at www.mercruiserparts.com

Nobody ever said owning a boat was cheap.... My spark plugs are $24 each, and I need 6 of them, every 2 years!!!

I appreciate the help. I think I may see if NAPA has it cheaper. But, if they don't, it looks like I'm going to have to go genuine. lol Thanks a lot for the quick responses!
