Need a converter box for 150 HP Force

I bit the bullet and took my boat in to the local boat shop. My diagnosis is a bad converter box. I have a few questions..

1) Is this something that goes bad all of a sudden, or is this a progressive thing I could have seen coming? What causes this to happen or is it like a light bulb - one day it just pops?

2) I see a replacement listed online for $285.00. Can anyone recommend a site/dealer where I may be able to find one cheaper? The replacement does not look too complicated, I feel confident I can do this in my driveway without having to go back to the boat shop.

Motor is a 1992 Force 150 HP. Model # 1508X92C, Ser # 027554

does anyone know where can get one, i bought one from marine salvage that turned out to be junk, tried contacting them,tryd phoning, there pretty good at getting your money and vanishing from my experience, so i still need one if anyone knows where to get one?
