I have a Johnson 1982 50HP Model No. J50BELCNR. I need to replace lower unit. I know that the assembly No. for the lower unit is 0393136 which was use on several johnson/evinrude engines from 40 to 60HP and I think from 1979 to 1985. Questions are:
1) how much is the fair price for a used unit, not rebuilt?
2) are there any other assembly numbers that can fit this engine.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum lau,

Here is a list of motors that used that gearcase, p/n 0393136 was superceded to p/n 0433572 both of which are NLA. BRP and Ishopmarine list a p/n 0392196 as a gearcase and bearing assembly that will work on that motor.

Here's the link to BRP'S web site where you can cross reference the p/n's, using the advanced search feature.

http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E

Maxrules.com lists a new gearcase for $1500 + and a remanufactured for $1250+

Ishopmarine lists p/n 0392196 at $955.30, Try here at IBOATS or there's always Ebay for a used one.

Hi Lau. I think the lower units went from 1979 to 1988. I can look if you are interested, if I have anything that can help you,

I used "Twin City Outboards". I got a rebuilt lower unit for my 1982 evinrude 50 for about $650 with core exchange. I received the unit two days after ordering it, and used the box it came in to ship out my core.

The 1976-1988 40/48/50/55/60 will all interchange with each other. The 1989-1992 are different as are the 1993-2005.

Re: Need a Johnson/Evinrude Lower Unit 50HP

I found a salvage yard near my local area lake that specilizes in older outboards. I bought a lower unit for my '85 60HP for $50! I bought a seal kit from iboats and used the parts from the 2 units to build 1 good unit. Been running it for 3 years! You might want to look around before you spend a ton of money!
