Just picked a Johnson 88 SPL motor for my pontoon. Want to get a manual and do some work on it.
1st ID engine. - Was sold to me as a 93. Serial is R ??211634 The two ?? could be 1B or 1R or 18
or something else. Model # is not legible.

2nd Can I still get a kit to make this oil injected? Anyone know the right part numbers?
3rd Any insight on what prop size to start with? 28ft tri-toon.

Look on the powerhead for a quarter-sized disk with the serial number stamped on it.

Well according to my very unofficial serial numbers collection, it is older than you were told.

I have 7,938,618 as a 1989, and 8,851,380 as a 1991, so your 8,211,634 is somewhere between 1989 and 1991

EDIT: I'm a bit confused by the "R" preceding the serial number. Historically, that meant a factory rebuilt powerhead. So if you do have a rebuilt motor, all bets are off.

Will post a picture tonight of the cowling. It has two wire plug and a 5 wire plug to stator if that helps. Is it possible to be a 94? If I look close at model I want to say R is the last letter. If it is a 94 could a dealer or someone have installed a rebuilt power head at some point from an earlier year? I did get it running last night on a home made stand and it runs great.

I did a little work on the ID Plate.... The CE just before the "R" indicates: C=8... E=9.... 1989

The R is a factory run number of no consequence.

With the great detective work by Joe, the model number for a 1989 88hp is J88MSLCER.

Decoded, that means:

J = Johnson
88= 88 horsepower
MS = Manual tilt, electric start / special
L = Long shaft (20")
CE = 1989
R = Identifies any mid-year changes if there were any. (None that I know of)

One more thing. It has power trim & tilt. Would that make any difference to the model number? It was an available option.

My information, for what it is worth, says that the PT&T was an available accessory kit. That add-on would not change the original model number, but of course you would have to consider that if you are ordering any parts involved in the removal/changeover/installation of the kit.
