Hello all,

Have been lurking here to learn lots. Am just about to launch into building my newest boat project. I have one or two hangups remaining.

Intro; The boat was a 1964 Uniflite 23'. It had the full cabin and a 350 inboard for power. The current owner had stripped it down to the hull, shaft, prop and rudder. The cap is still on, but the upper structure, and all wood removed.

Intended result; To have a boat with lots of fishing room. Probably have a pilot house similar to the Shamrock or a small cabin up front like a Defiance 220. I suppose a center console could work, but would lke to get out of the NW weather.

Delima; Stay with inboard? I have a good 350 marine that needs the extras put on, ie carb, starter etc. I DONT have any idea what transmission goes in there, or what all needs to be between the engine and shaft. Ideas here would be great.

I have a source for a rebuilt Cobra outdrive to mount up to the 350. I could plug all the holes (glass over) and go with an IO FWC and skip the transmission issue. This guy also has everything else I need. Steering, fuel tanks, controls etc.

Really like to find some wisdom and guidance and a shove in the right direction. I spent the last 3 weeks scouring every type of boat sales trying to find something already done. All I can find is junk or, not what I want and would redo anyway.

Thanks for looking, Chris

Re: Need a little push

Welcome to iboats. The one thing here I can comment on is the OMC Cobra part.....I would definitely NOT got to trouble to reconfigure a boat for an I/O and then mount and obsolete drive system in it. If we were talking Merc/Volvo well that's a different story.

Ayuh,... Many times the bottom of the hull is So different between the full Inboards, that adapting an Outdrive just don't Work....
Havta see some Pictures...
And,.... Your Inboard motor really isn't a Plug & Play situation with ANY outdrives...
More parts, More Money...
And,.... No OMC is cheap enough to go thru the work of mounting it....

Thats a good start. Stay away from the IO. I found a 33' today with twin 6 cyl Volvos w/ 280's for free. The guy cant pay his drydock fees. Not worth my time I dont think.

So, back to my straight inboard and the 350. How do I figure out what transmission to put in it?

Pictures? I would like to go from this. To something like the boat Seagenie1 built. I just would rather have a pilot house up front.
