I'm trying to build a push pole. I'd like it to be telescoping so I could easily store it on the boat but so that it's long enough to do some good when I'm in 16" of water and sea grass.

I was thinking I'd build it with pvc pipe and just get some threaded fasters to put 2 or 3 sections together. Would pvc be strong enough to use as a push pole or would it flex too much under the stress.

I'm on a Key West 211cc so I'll be pushing about 3,500 lbs with boat, motor, gear, people, etc; if that matters.

That is going to be a lot of weight to push, especially with PVC. That will flex way too much. I picked up a nice telescoping push pole with duck feet for around $30 at the local outdoor store.

What he said. Check Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas. They both have nice telescoping push poles. Probably exactly the same, come to think of it.

agree, and the couplings would be the weak points.

How about a wooden dowell from Lowes? It won't telescope, but it should be plenty strong to use for poling your boat. You can cut it to whatever length seems best. Just whack of a little at a time.
