I've got a 1975 Mercruiser 188hp Ford 302 V8 that I just bought. Can any one give me a simple run down on the operations of the dist/coil/points/condensor? As always, Thanks!

Kevin F.

KF
The dist distributes
The coil coils
The Points point
The condensor condenses

Seriously, I would get a manual before starting.

I agree with Uncle Dave. Get a manual. I have the same set-up but merc. used three different distributors for that model. You'll need to find out which one you have. Fords are different from Chevys. The cylinders are numbered different and the rotor turns ccw. Post your engine serial # if possible to identify. Try posting with '302 Ford' in your header and you will get a better response, because you will bring out the die-hard Ford guys.....JK

the distributor is a timer, the points are just an on off switch and the coil is an inductive transformer/. any other questions :) ?

doesn't matter if your talking about a 302 v8 or a 2 cylinder daihatsu motor. The ignition is the same.

The coil makes the the high voltage 'zap'.

The points turn the coil on & off. The condenser helps the points by storing juice.

The distributor sends the zap to each spark plug and it also varies the timing.

And a tuneup is - getting it all to work in perfect harmony :)

Thanks Dunaruna, I guess my my question should have been in regards to the points. You made it make sense. Thank you Uncle Dave for your deep and thoughtful post. I've ordered a manual, but as I stated, I just bought the boat.
