Looking to purchase a slightly larger boat for this year. I have a 14" alumicraft now, but grossly underpowered with a 6 Hp yammie. And she's old. Guy at work is offering me a 16" 1989 Grumman aluminum V-Hull with a galvie trailer in good shape, and a 30 Hp Merc probably same Era. that runs well. I know what to look for as far as condition goes, but i wanted to know if you thought the value was there on this one. Here are a couple of pics taken from my cell phone for a basic idea. This guy is a nice old dude, and he uses the boat only to go back and forth to his camp. Claims it will hold a HUGE amount of weight for the size. Pics aren't great. Think it's worth $800?

That's exactly what i thought. Can't find alot of information on Grumman boats for some reason. Even IBoats manufacturer forum only has about 6 posts. If anyone knows what they are all about.. IE: Solid construction?
Im going to buy this before the spring for sure. Ive never owned a Merc.. Just lot's of Johnson's, and Rudes that are easy to maintain. Any horror stories about late 80's Merc? Thanks for the Advice..

Grumman built some of the best aluminum canoes and boats for years. They also built truck and utility bodies so they know what they are doing with aluminum. I owned one of their 17 foot aluminum canoes and it was built light yet very strong. At one time many of the resorts wouldn't use anything but Grumman equipment.

once you figure out where things are on a merc, not hard to work on. just a little harder to rebuild. Grummans are terrific boats.

Where I originally lived ,Queens New York,Jamaica Bay had many Grummans ,they were sold locally, built strong, pretty stable for an alum, for $800 your STEALING it.Grumman is/was into aircraft and built many of the alum.bodied trucks that are still in use ,I know a guy in the Fl.Keys has 2 grumman 1960's trucks used daily, point is,they know their way around aluminium,be sure you dont paint the bottom but with anything other than paint that says ok for alum.or you start electrolosis probs.I know first hand.As a kid,I painted my alum.boat with Woolseys BRONZE racing bottom paint.Found it in someones trash(one mans junk is another mans treasure)proudly displayed it,put boat i water, next day the bronze turned green,no big deal. But not long after, the leaks started,.By the end of summer,it was a sieve.

Re: need advice again.

I was unable to get a good look at the rig due to the reflection from all that "white stuff" on the ground. Is that the beach? Ditto to all the previous comments regarding Grumman boats and Mercury motors. My first motor was a Mercury and have had others since although I prefer Johnson/Evinrude (OMC, pre-BRP) because most things about them seem simpler than Mercury. While Grumman built good stuff, care and maintenance cannot be ignored. Check it carefully. Good luck.

I haven't seen, not do i expect to see any beach for quite some time..I am starting to get exited about early spring fishing though. Im starting to salivate at the thought of owning this thing. I know the seller well, and he is a good man, and if he takes the same care of his boats as he does his farm equipment, it should be a real treat. Man.. Bring on the open water!! I have been skunked this year ice fishing..Thanks Guys..
