Ok I just got my boat back from having a new motor installed and I havent been real confident with the mechanic there. After a lot of mucking around with warning alarmsgoing off, wires not connected etc he tells me that I can have the boat back but there is now a problem with the alternator.

He said the alternator is shot so they dissconnected the wires and have taped up the wires up because it was draining the battery and making the gauges go hey wire ??? He also said I am getting some popping at WOT because battery is getting low and staving the pertol Pump??

And then he said to contact my insurance company as it was part of the submerging claim when I left the bung out and that I should get the assecessor to contact him, and he said its going to be an expensive quote.

Because he wants to get his money back from playing with the sensors, wiring etc etc.

Guys, does this sound correct? Should I connect the alternator back up? and if so what wires go where? I have an Orange one, Purple and one with red and purple.

this guys is confusion the hell out of me, what should I do?

Re: need advice alternator

man, your sure having your fair share of grief. bummer for ya.

since your not trusting your tech. maybe have the alt. removed and bench tested at your local alt. repair shop? they should be able to tell if the alt. is working proper or not.

have ya got the service manual? it has a lot of info in it. tests that can be performed, trouble shooting guides. wiring diagrams so you can see what all has relevance to the charging circuit. along with where the wires go to. have ya cleaned up both ends of all wires so there is good continuity after the submersion.

best i can do for ya.. and good luck..

Service manual is a must have item, and it is FREE in the adults only section. Maybe your mechanic needs a copy too

Re: need advice alternator

All I want to do is go boating lol yea I am having a terrible time. Anyway I am doing what you said, i am taking the alternator out and going to get it checked and put a new one in myself.I really dont want to take it back to me mechanic, who knows whay other problems he will find.

I have got the two bolts out, but there seems to be a spacer inbetween the Bracket and alternator But I cant get it out, any clues?

If the bolts are out, just pull the alternator out, keep track of the spacer and reinstall it when you put it back on.
The OEM parts manual for a 95 4.3 doesn't show a spacer, but if the alternator has been replaced with a different mounting bracket size, the spacer would be needed to keep it tight and not twist and move around.
