There's nothing to "tune" on a Holley during a rebuild..well, dam little.

You DID set the float level and the idle mixture/speed on the boat after you received it? I'll assume you've got external float level adjustment.

The new Holleys are power valve blowout resistant. Haven't seen a blown one for a while.

There's simply NO carburetor that is adjusted to bolt on and go after a rebuild..you ALWAYS have to adjust something for your particular engine. with twin carbs, this "on the engine" set-up is even more important.

I called around prior to bringing the boat or carbs in... looking for a shop that would take the whole boat, assembled. I paid them to remove, clean, rebuild, reinstall, and tune.... there should have been no reason for me to adjust anything when it was returned.

With that said, they told me yesterday that the issue was an incorrect gasket. A gasket they ordered and installed. I gave them no part numbers, placed no orders, and installed no parts... that's what I paid them to do. Why should I pay more than the original cost of the work, if they had to put more time into re-doing it because they did it incorrectly the first time?

You wouldn't be satisfied if you brought your car in for brakes only to find them squeeling uncontrollably when you got them back would you? What if when you brought the car back to the shop they told you that you owed them additional for the follow-up repairs because they had installed the wrong pads the first time?

If what you are describing is accurate, then obviously you have a case that they should not charge you extra. But hearing it here doesn't change anything.... Let us know the result when they "settle up" with you.

It was actually the first shop that brought my boat to the second... not me. They couldn't do it, so they called around and found another shop that could (I believe still within their company) several hours away....

That's what I understood... from what you said, it sounds like the first shop installed the wrong gasket (most quality rebuild kits come with several), and as a result it was leaking fuel internally and dumping it into the intake plenum... When you take a carb apart to rebuild that was rnuning right, the easiest way to know you have the right gaskets is to simply match to the old ones that were there...

Set the floats with the boat in the water, check the fuel pressure, and go boating.

I've rebuilt quite a few hollys and i'm not even sure how you can screw up the gaskets. The bowl cover, carb body, and metering block all have alignment pins so in effect everything is "indexed".
You can't put a gasket on backwards, or in the wrong spot, or upsidedown, not without punching holes in the new gasket to get it to line up.

Black smoke = running rich (too much fuel)
But you can go on listening to these guys telling you the Holleys are bad and you should buy Edels.
