Need advice how to replace prop

I have a 1971 80HP motor. It is red striped. The number on the outside of the prop is 13 1/4 R17MWG. I understand now that the numbers mean that it is a Michigan wheel, 13-1/4" diameter by 17 pitch right-hand rotation. I have two questions. 1. Can someone tell me how many splines it has? 2. If I want to change to say a Mercury prop does it just have to match these specs? Thanks in advance.

Re: Need advice how to replace prop

Dave, You may change to any prop that will fit your motor, Mercury, Michigan, Vortex etc. You motor has a standard propshaft and gearcase, and will accept Prop pitches from 13-25" or more. Simply look it up in an application table for the prop of your choice.

Props for Mercruisers and V6 Outboards will not fit that motor, due to the larger gearcases they have.

David, You also need to get the correct prop for your gearcase, or it will not fit properly!
