How do you tell if your lower unit is going out??? I think that mine is in good condition bc if spins freely when i spin it by hand. If it was going out would it be hard to spin by hand??? I was just wondering if there was a way to check you l/u gears without braking the l/u down!?!?!

It should spin freely when in neutral as you're only rotating the prop shaft. Then it should not turn in F or R.

Re: Need advice/info!

The driveshaft and gears are in constant motion whenver the engine is running. Damage to them is usually caused by poor or inadequate lubricant, misalignment, or improper shifting.

Most damage to the gears is caused by slow shifting from neutral to forward or reverse, or by too quickly shifting from reverse to forward or vice versa. That can also result in rounding of the dog's ears which will be indicated by jumping out of gear.

If the propeller strikes an underwater object, the propeller shaft should be inspected to assure that it is not bent.

Otherwise the gearcase should outlast the engine.

I find in the real world that my power heads always outlast the LU's, at least in my 50's collection... Of course that may be due to the reasons you stated (but not by me of course!)

My take is that if Mr Murphy has anything to say about it, the section wilth the most moving parts will probably die first. :(
