There is always more raw water available than the engine's cooling system can use. I think the "no water will exit" is referring to the engine's cooling water not flowing into the exhaust until the thermostat opens. There will always be raw water bypassing the engine's cooling system and going straight to the exhaust. How much bypass is determined by the demands of the engine's cooling system as thermo opens up. The #12 thermo housing from pic#2 is quite a sophisticated traffic director, keeping the available raw water and engine demand cooling water flow balanced. So pretty sure water will begin flowing out the transom well before the thermo opens. The first stuff that comes out will be what had not drained out of the exhaust manifolds and exhaust tube. Hope this is relevant to the question.

Very much so. Thanks Mac. Will be lake testing in a day or two. Fingers crossed. Didn't do muff testing and air-in-clear-hose tests because I'm now in an association and I'm pushing the rules a bit having boat in the driveway. Don't want to run loud a$$ boat for a long time LOL. But if need be I can run it to father-in-laws for serious diagnosis if lake test goes bad.

Ran to the ramp real quick. Idles up to about 170. Which on my gauge has always been normal and it has bad resolution scaling. Putterred out about 100 yards. Started heating up. Went right back. So back to the drawing board for me....

pulled and replaced impeller, it was missing a few flaps. took it out and it was better but started heating up after full throttle for about a mile, pulled exhaust elbow and found missing impeller flaps in the grooves at boot and also blown gasket between exhaust port and coolant port. replaced and it will not go above 160 no matter how long i run it. hope this helps
