A friend of mine is in the process of planning a "round the World" driving trip. He figures that most of the World drives on the right side of the road, therefore he wants a left hand drive (LHD) car. He then figured he needs to have a camper that is 4WD and diesel powered.
So his requirements are:
4WD
Diesel
Campervan
LHD
Tough as nails
Small enough to fit down narrow European roads
Big enough to sleep two

He's got plenty of money, but as with all people who have plenty he's a tight-ar$e!

Any of you good guys in the USA suggest anything? We have 4WD campers based on Toyota Landcruisers out here in Australia, but they're RHD and he doesn't want to ship anything to the States - which he wants to make his start point. Thanks...

Mark.

Maybe someone is 'camperizing' these babies. They are Mercedes diesels in a USA Freightliner wrapping. They'd make a great camper.

http://www.fl-sprinter.com/

EDIT: just saw the requirement for 4wd. Don't think that is an option here.

Duna, he's buying... I'm not sure you could get Hertz to allow you to drive through Afghanistan etc! Thanks for the earthroamer site details neumanns, I've passed them on. :)

new VW vanagon.
or whatever they call them now.
narrow, can get one equipped with a full kitchen, and possibly a toilet.
VW diesel is a proven engine, and the tops come in either wedge style pop-up, or in full length lift-up.\

Any diesel will be very hard to come by here in the USA, except diesel 1/2 ton trucks.

If he wants a diesel (probably a good idea), I suggest he starts in Europe. VW is probably the most universal car in the world.

Ken

Thanks Matty and KIZ - I can't find any reference to a 4WD version of the vans on the vw.com website, am I missing something here?

VW & Mercedes don't make campers, they make walk through vans. Other companies convert them.

IMO merc is the most popular worldwide, they are predominantly diesel.

Mitsubishi, Iveco and fiat also make walkthroughs.

The easiest solution would be to hire at the respective airports.

Aldo
