Whatever two wheel drive vehicle you end up with, make sure it has positraction or a limited slip differential. It helps on wet, snotty, and unimproved ramps.

X2 on this. I had a 2wd Chevy W/T awhile back, it had positive traction rear in it (both wheels drive as opposed to only 1). The truck worked very well both pulling up wet ramps, and up snow covered hills. Only 2wd (and Chevy) I ever owned. I had it for 9 years and 3 boats LOL. I have no problem buying a 2wd, as long as it has a posi, and may do so in the near future.

In addition to the full sized pickups mentioned, a Toyota Tacoma or Nissan Frontier with a V6 would work well. My 07 Tacoma is rated for 6,500 lbs and has pulls my 20 foot bowrider easily.

I used to have a 1989 ford super cab with an 8ft bed. It had a 5.0 engine. I had plenty of towing power but it wasn't worth a darn when it came to towing a boat out of the water. The wheels would aways spin. One time I had a guy pull my boat out of the water with a old junky 6 cylinder Chevy 4x4 Blazer because my truck wouldn't do the job. I traded my truck in and got a Bronco 4x4 with the 5.0 engine. I had a 21 ft bow rider with a tandum wheel trailer. I never had that problem again.I think it had to do with the length of the bed. I now have a Dodge Ram Quad cab Hemi powered .Still no problems.

BTW, those truck labels (1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, 1 ton) are no longer accurate. All of them have payload capacities larger than the labels. Even my '99 Dakota can haul more than 1000# in its bed.
