Hey everyone I have a 200 hp Evinrude its a 1979 and I finally got it running and when I run the water on it and start it up even at idle the tach says about 2500 rpm... I know this is wayyy to high.. can anyone tell me where to start with this ?

Did you do the sync and link on it? You need to make sure the carb butterflys are all closed at idle. The idle speed on that engine is set by adjusting the idle timing screw on the spark advance lever. Double check to make sure the throttle cable is adjusted correctly at the engine end and it is set to push the spark lever all the way back when in neutral. Are you working from a factory service manual?

im actually working on it from advice from here.. all the butterflies seem to be closed at idle .. and i did notice that the red lever on the side of the engine i am assuming it is a manual choke or prime... was all the way up ... when i turned it down the motor quit.. so im hoping I can get the right idle when i get that red lever in the proper position .

You may want to double check the model number on that engine. If that engine is a 79 200, it did not have the primer solenoid which you mentioned. The 79 engine has a solenoid which is directly linked to the choke butterflys in two of the three carbs. The primer soleniods with the red lever came out in 1980 when they eliminated the choke butterflys in the carbs. That red lever should be set parallel to the length of the solenoid.

That set screw on the spark advance lever is the one which controls the idle timing. The timing should be around 6 degrees, then adjusted by hand to the correct idle rpm's. You will want the engine to idle between 650-700 when in gear-idling at normal rest in the water. You may want to disconnect the throttle cable when making the idle adjustments, then reconnect the throttle cable later. Check to insure that the middle carb roller is not incontact with the throttle cam when at idle. You should be able to put a piece of paper between the cam and roller at idle.

Re: Need advice on idle with 200hp evinrude

Ok heres the update.. I have the spark advance as far back as it well let me have it, the throttle cable is adjusted and the cam is a papers width away from the roller for the carbs on the center carb.. Idle is STILL around 1800-1900 rpm at idle... when put in gear it barley drops... motor doesnt clunk or anything when it is put in gear and it doesnt seam to be screaming when its idoling... also just to let you know the boat is not in the water i only have the earmuffs hooked up to it... well that make a difference?

You can't set the idle when the boat is on the trailer. Any engine running on the trailer will have unrestricted exhaust and will have a high idle. I would think 1200 would be more normal on the trailer. When the boat is floating level in the water, the backpressure of the water will significantly lower the idle of the engine. Set the idle when the boat is fully floating.

Thanks for the advice... took boat into the water today for the first time.. motor didnt want to work very well at all.. adjusted idol but couldnt get the motor to stay running at anything lower then 1700-2000rpm and then when put in gear the motor wouldnt rev up enough to move very fast ...just wanted to put along.

found a broken wire that goes to one of the coils... its just a single wire that has a little boot on the end and it snaps onto a post on the coil it isnt the plug wire its a single wire the plug wire is on another stud beside this one.. also i found a broken plug wire that pulled right out of the boot on the other bank.
