Hey guys pretty new to boating here so any help appreciated. Considering buying a 2014 Lowe Jon boat (1436) with an 80's model merc 9.8 (supposedly just has top end put in and comes with extra lower unit) and a homemade trailer for 1900 bucks. Is this a good deal in canada? Any idea what this boat would cost new?

Sounds like a pretty decent deal if the motor is in fact good and the trailer is built well enough. Have you seen the boat, motor, and trailer? Do you have any pics of it?

We would really need to see some pics of it for the best assessment.

If the boat is a 2014 and is still like it came from the factory, meaning some dimwit hasn't removed the middle bench seat or something... it should be a good boat. A 1436 will be pretty narrow though and the stability may be less than desirable if you're a big/large person.

Ask to take the boat out on the water before buying it so you can make sure the motor runs well and there aren't any big leaks in the boat. If the seller won't take it to the water for you to try, something is wrong with it.

I doubt $1900 would buy the engine. Agree 36" is really narrow and I bet it has low sides and a 15" transom to boot meaning it is only made for slow running narrow river sort of things with light, small boat, traffic only. Since it's this year's model going to bet the current owner learned the hard way that it's too narrow.....that's the reason for the sale. I ran a Lowe Lake John for a lot of years and loved it but it was wide and had high sides. Personally I wonder why they make a boat that narrow.

Just checking ads - that boat (only) retails in the U.S. for $1200. The motor would be worth $300-$500. A homebuilt trailer can be worth $100-$1000 depending on how well it was built. $1900 sounds OK, but not cheap. Try and get him down some.

The motor is of little value, a couple hundred bucks at most. Most homemade trailers aren't worth much either, they are typically junk.

The boat...well, I have no clue why they make 36" wide boats like this, there must be a reason, but I've never figured it out. Maybe it's because they can be made cheap.

In other words, there are much better boat, motor and trailer packages out there for less money.

After reviewing other comments, I found something I missed when I priced the engine.........."an '80 model. Sorry for the distraction.
