I have been searching and reading for a few days on this problem. I have a 99 Chaparral 1930 sport. It came originally with a v8. The previous owner had a new 3.0 mercruiser put in. It also has a 2.00 alpha gen 2. I guess they didnt get the alignment right so the coupler went the other day. Rather than pull the motor and put in a new coupler ,I will align it right if I do it,Id like to install a v8.The little 3.0 runs great but it is just underpowered for this heavy boat. I would like to find a donor boat and swap back in an older 350 setup. It looks like I cant run a v8 on this nice gen 2 alpha so will I need to just swap out the whole motor and outdrive from a donor boat. Will the holes line up. The 3.0 is a side mount version. Would an older motor work that has a pre alpha drive.

That sure don't look like a hack job Bond-O. :D

Could be some company that makes special brackets / mounts for the 3.0 to fit in a V6/V8 space?

Well, to put a V8 back in, you're going to need an exhaust Y pipe.
You'll also need to change the outdrive unit to one with proper gearing.
Hard to say what you'll need as far as the shift cables & mechanism, throttle cable, as well as wiring.

.

It still looks like crap, and probably is why the coupler couldn't be aligned. But on the plus side, you easily see the holes in the stringers that the V8 mounts need to go in.

Wiring won't be a problem, if you get a complete Mercruiser engine. They are plug and play. And since the boat originally had a V8, it'll work.

The Y-pipe and your drive ratio are your two biggest problems. But since you are going to spend $$$$$ chaning the engine, an SEI drive is $1500, and you can get the 1.47 ratio you need.

Last stringer job (nightmare) i was involved in, we did 9 inch stainless lag studs. Epoxied them in. They were a 6 inch lag thread epoxied in STRAIGHT (perpendicular) to the stringer. The other end was a 1/2 20 fine thread, three inchs long. That seemed to work well. If motor is gonna be out that is what i would recommend.
