Some lead from the front some lead from the back, but as was already pointed out if you lead from the center you know what's going on.

Re: Need advice - Starting new mgmt position...

I once was saddled with a counterpart - equal level in a different function - with whom I had to work closely every day, and who was always very aware of the status stuff. Had to have the biggest, best office, newest office equipment (even once "redirected" my purchase of some office equipment to his group when he realized it would make his group look like laggards) and every other sign and symbol. In essence, he was competing with me for best appearance.

It made no difference though in our actual status. His pettiness showed through. When people needed something done, they came to me and my group. When the plant manager wanted to show appreciation for our mutual work, he took special pains to single my group out. Drove this guy crazy. The quality of the office, in the end, meant virtually nothing to anyone except him.

Well said and a good story. Thank you :)

Re: Need advice - Starting new mgmt position...

So just an update. I spoke with my new boss about other onboarding knick knacks that have to be done, paperwork etc...So I popped the question in a very casual sense... Keep in mind that my main reason for this whole discussion is my curiousity really needed to be satisfied, because on the surface placement of subordinate and mgmt seemed unusual. Anyway, in casual conversation I brought it up as "so...tell me what's up with so and so getting one of the offices on the mgmt wall? Was there some leadership role they are involved in or was there just no other room?" I said this with a smile in my voice and stressed the ...I'm just curious tone. So the reply I received was very casual and not argumentative at all. Basically the room is inferior due to size. The room was an afterthought after the other two mgmt offices were constructed. The nicest part of the room is the window overlooking the lake but the positives stop there. There was also a security drop down that wall to secure some sensitive scanning equipment, and for whatever reason, that wall was best for the drop.

In short, I'm good! :) My curiosity was satisfied and I'm glad I asked. It would have urked my curiosity too much not to get an answer. Start date is set, notice given to my current employer, I'm ready to get in and get my hands dirty (so to speak :) )

To top it off, the new boss indicated that another mgr may be willing to switch offices because they are not in the office all that much due to travel and the natural light is a turn off for them. Boss said... "let's see how things go." That means let's see if you're worth it! LOL. Cool. I'm up for the task, but regardless I'm blessed to have this opportunity. Thanks to all of you that took the time to talk it out and challenge me. Very good discussion.

Thank you,
hd. :fish2:

Nice finish, glad it really didn't matter to you anyways. Those who feel things like this are important generally wash out anyways. Now go get em!!

I thought you said the room with the window was also bigger :noidea: probably hard to tell from just an interview type of visit.

Sure looked that way from what I saw but mainly I based that opinion on the fact that the other two mgmt offices ( that I did enter) were identical. I inappropriately assumed the third office was equal.

Lesson learned.

IDK, if it was me the last thing I would worry about in the beginning is where my office is located. Unless you have multiple offers and one has better accommodations than the other. I would worry more about being an asset to the company and let the office location work itself out.......

New to management? New to this company?

Read this book: How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie (1936).
It still works.
